There are plenty of GPS speedo apps for the iPhone. That will be a good place to watch those to.

I have one installed, it's just called 'Speedometer' it lets you set 4 overspeed warning of your choosing and has a nice big digital display indicating actual speed. Many other features for checking fuel economy etc.

It also records a log of your journey which probably would be useless in a court of law but a nice feature :clown:

Cheers

Where abouts did you get the period looking speaker covers from :) That certainly is coming together nicely.

Given what I have read here, you can buy stand alone GSP speedo's ?? I'm finding it's very difficult driving something with a MPH speedo in Victoria given the incredibly tiny margin for error with speed limits.

Speaker grills, I searched and searched for something that suited the era of the car - ended up handing over a kings ransom and purchased through De Franzose. The fitting are perfect for six by nines but the actual cover just falls short of 9" (you may detect this in the pictures), I had to fit an MDF panel so that the speakers were slightly recessed then cut the foam and vinyl to suit the grills.

The app on the iPhone has a nice big speed readout, I'm long sighted so have slightly blurred vision of instruments without reading glasses (which are useless when driving) so a nice big clear indication of speed and pre-set overspeed warnings are really useful. Having the benefit of continuous charging without wires hanging around is a bonus.

Thanks :)

Someday I'll get something fancy like an iphone. I'm still making do with a 7year old nokia :roflmao:

The one I use is Just Speed. It records distance and max and min speed for the journey. Very handy when you fit new tyres to the CX and find the speedo is not as optimistic as it once was. Shane, can't believe you are so behind. Last journey to Melbourne handled with ease, with my wife manning the map app, beats any GPS and leaves a street directory for dead. Melbourne is so confusing for us Sydney siders, 45km to the centre and you are still in the country, plus it is so flat.

Shane, can't believe you are so behind. .

I've never had a "I" of anysort. Ipods/Ipads/Iphones etc have always been and expensive luxury from what I can see. I'm frequently amazed at the teenage kids that have $1000 iphones .... Damned if I could afford one, dunno how they do :) We don't even have a GPS ... sad right :clown: Someday we'll get one, it could be quite useful.

I've still got my old work nokia that's about 5years old. It' makes phone calls and costs nothing (so is the ideal phone). Certainly it isn't a gps or music player though :roflmao: Would you believe me if I said our music is still played from CD's :joker:

seeya,
Shane L.

Whippersnapper. Gol danged CDs. When I was a young lad we had to get our music from wax cylinders. Uphill. Both ways. In the snow. And we liked it! You have no idea the privations we suffered so we could listen to Bicycle Built For Two on one of those new-fangled record players. You youngsters never had it easier! Now get off my lawn!! :whip::doh:

Luxury!! The first sound system I had in an old ID Safari was a battery operated turntable with two speakers, the only time I could listen to music was when I had a passenger who sat in the rear and became one of the first DJs. I learned to drive very smoothly for fear of having the needle zip across several tracks  :clown:

By the way, I did take a good few pics of the RHD wiring loom let me know if they may be of any use to you.

Cheers

Perhaps I don't fall into the archaic category but recently I was explaining to my niece that we used to record LPs onto cassettes in real time.. not like today with iTunes, etc.. she was shocked. :joker:

Matthew :)

For the trip we did to Cit In at Mansfield the CX speedo was continually failing (turned out later it was the square end on the rotating inner - fixed by an instrument guy in Wollongong) Anyway, we relied on our Tom Tom for the speedo, in Victoria, at Easter. Never a thing went wrong.

Sorry to not replying earlier. My mouse had literally fried, and so I hopped on dads computer for 5 minutes. Broke the damn thing- didn't realize I could hop so heavily!

Yes please on the pics. Emailed to me or posted here for everyone, either or works for me.

I'll be on my way towards Daffy's place tomorrow. I have to pull a pattern US '69 harness out of an Area 52 car at his storage yard. One of the few US patterns I don't have, and they're beyond rare. I'll be surprised if there are 100 of the '69s (not '69.5) left in any condition.

I thought I had more images than I appear to, most of the pics I've taken are for reference in putting things back as they were. These are a couple of the loom entry through the firewall on the left hand side - the main loom continues across to the right hand side dropping off connections for switches etc. and onto the binnacle and ignition switch.

The main loom appears to be complete with connections for features not installed as original equipment for an Aus delivered D Special i.e. clock/ glovebox light/ ashtray light/ heater control light/ temp gauge etc. So adding these is a relatively easy task.

I'm guessing the two green wires that exit on the left are for the A pillar interior light switch?

I've not made much progress since the dash and sound installation, the underdash aircon vent is now ready to put back in the car. Interestingly I have cleaned the evaporator/fans with compressed air and it is much quieter, must have had a leaf of scrap of paper across a fan vane because it used to make brrrrrrrrrt noise that was very annoying.

I've revisited the rear of the car, I need to get as much of my collected stash back on the car as we may be relocating in the near future.

Fitted the rear mudflaps and a pair of NOS taillights today, pretty well finished any work I need to do in this area now.

As most of you will know the tail light clusters are sided i.e there is a left and right, I had managed to cobble together two lefts from what I had and parts donated to the cause. This set came up on ebay, one of those listings that didn't come up in the usual searches and I think I was up against only one other bidder - needless to say a bargain.

Wiring is straightforward, just remember to include the ground for the reversing lights.

The chrome reflectors being new makes a huge difference to the brightness of the tail lights when on, very purdy :)

Not a worry on the quantity, Chris. The two pics at least confirm what I had been thinking how the layout happens. Even the French have to follow logic on occasion! In my eyes, that rear connection group looks awfully lonely. On the LHD cars, everything going to the steering pod is also right at that point.

The main loom appears to be complete with connections for features not installed as original equipment for an Aus delivered D Special i.e. clock/ glovebox light/ ashtray light/ heater control light/ temp gauge etc. So adding these is a relatively easy task.

Yah- it was an easy thing to make one loom fit all. I am slightly surprised about the temp gauge, those as far as I knew were an option for everybody except the US. 814 gives instructions on how to make the leads and install the gauge. The caveat however is "LHD". Which puts us back to "one loom, everything RHD".

Yes- those two wires are that door switch. One is a control ground for the roof lights (center pin on the switch) the other is the switch ground.

Even just dirt will do that if you have a regular multi-blade fan. 40+ years is a long time for buildup to happen and throw that out of balance. If your fan is the squirrel-cage style it's so easy to catch a receipt or something else small on there and remain stuck.

I do wish we had gotten these instead of the round Lucas lamps. They look so much better. They probably perform better, too.

I'm all over the place with this car at the moment, the serious work is happening on the roof which is now in primer ready for topcoat. Once I have something worth showing I'll update the progress.

The aircon underdash unit is now fitted, all ready for gassing up and testing.

This is a revisit of the Retrosound headunit installation, I wasn't happy with the look of the original installation. A friend has access to a Zond CNC flatbed router and offered to cut a new faceplate if I supplied the cut files - an offer too good to pass up on.

The rear face has been cut from composite brushed alluminium, which I have screenprinted in 2K black.

attachment.php

The black is an ABS textured plastic, the idea was to get the feel of the Continental Edison - I'm still on the lookout for a smaller shaft style knob set, but these I think are more in keeping with the era than the Mustang knob set that came with the radio.

Applied a 70's colour filter to this shot :clown:
This is the compromise in using a current technology headunit with all the bells and whistles against being a purist and spending a motsa on a unit that would have been used in the 70's. Not much can be done about the digital display but the unit now looks integrated into the dash and has a period look.

attachment.php

. . .and whilst playing with filters a nice aged look, with some old school blues  :headbang:

Good night, Chris, that is gorgeous. I knew the RetroSound unit would be an excellent fit for the hole, but what you've achieved is nothing short of perfect. I know they offer several different knob options- are those supposed to be the Becker replacements?

Thanks for the feedback Bill :wink2:

There is a bit of fiddling to get the Retrosound unit to fit neatly, the trick for me was to have the unit slightly angled down so that the rear connectors don't come in contact with the plastic heater demister tube, and mounting the knob shafts as close to the unit as possible.

The unit I have, I bought in Australia via ebay seller fordmustangparts, as the name suggests these guys specialise in Ford Mustangs and as such their Retrosound unit is styled accordingly with big chrome knobs and chrome face etc. Knowing I was eventually going to customise a faceplate to suit the D installation the price and convenience of having representation in Aus for warranty claims etc. suited me.

You know your stuff, yes, the replacement knobs are the Becker style :)

Perfect for me would have been black rather than chrome face and push buttons, they are available in this combination but not through the Aus reseller. I'm more than happy with the outcome, especially the sound, in real life the unit really does look like it was meant to be there :)

BTW, I always print more than one when I do this sort of work for myself so I have spare faceplates if anyone is interested.

Cheers
Chris
