My manual 504 gearbox pops out of reverse, unless you actually hold the gear lever in place.

It's probably just a detent spring, which are cheap and easy to replace, although another gearbox might be even cheaper. I've got 5 or 6 gearboxes lying around and there's probably someone in your area that has heaps of them too.

I'd first check that the problem isn't that it's not going right into gear. Have a look at the linkages and see if there isn't too much slack...
