Gawd, another R8 upgrade

Will do. I think you mean min. 3mm. That’s what it is here in NSW Australia also. I think they are marginal to be honest. I plan on creating a testing spot and ensuring that spot is > 3mm!

That way the engineer can say “It was 3mm where I measured it.

Thank you :)

In my case it actually is maximum 3mm.

But I guess there are other regulations for a street car. Mine is a racecar.

bit hard to measure with my digital calipers, but I’d guess it’s between 2.5-3mm.

Maybe contact MCRacing in France and see if they have a spec or standard.

Thank you very much :)

Yes, apparently there are a couple of other things I have to ask about.

My advice is buy them just as you’re about to fit them. Don’t do what I did and buy them 4-5 yrs earlier and store them in the rafters for years.

Sorry for ruining your thread with all my question :)

I've ordered a set of guards from MC Racing today. How did you make your payment? Through bank transfer on advance?

So, the bodyshell is away being modified to fit the collapsible steering column but I suspect the last 2 months have just been sitting there untouched during lockdown, so I’ve turned my attention to the panels I kept back at home to work on while the shell is away. I effectively have the rear end. The front panels, bonnet and doors are on the car.

I see there seems to be some type of air scoop in the rear guards. Is there a corresponding hole in the inner guard or some system to feed cool air to the engine bay or carbs ? I don't recall seeing that feature on the body shell when I last saw it pre Covid.

Hi Bustamif,

They were on the guards from MC racing so would have been there when you saw it (provided the rear guards were fitted at the time). I have no plans for how I’ll use them them yet. They may just serve to make the rear inner wheel arches dirty! I do like someone’s suggestion of rear brake cooling, but doubt it’s needed.

What are your front brake plans? The big brake for an 8 or 10 is usually the R16 system. There are a couple on here who find that great, even on their race cars. On my A310 I struggled with them, R16 system being standard fit from 74-76 4 cylinders, R17 vented from 71-73. I've followed in Brett's R8 build and fitted Clio 2 vented discs and the matching calipers. There's more unsprung mass I know, but damn does the car stop. I did also swap from the original 20.6mm master to a 22mm. Much firmer pedal. Heaps of pad options with a Clio system too.

Similar to brett’s setup. Williams clio discs, calipers and kangoo mc and twin boosters.

Minor progress to report. The bodyshell has been in Covid lockdown at the engineers workshop for the last 3 months, I had dropped it off there at the start of May. I kept some of the hanging panels back as above and yesterday laid down some colour on the rear jupe panel and the Boot lid.

This is just the base coat. Metallic topcoat and clear over base will have to be sprayed on the car (as will the roof and some other parts of the shell when I get it back) - for that I’ll need to rig up a spray booth. Weather turned a bit today, so held off trying to spray the two rear guards. But if feels like it’s moving forward and may soon all the the same colour for the first time in a long time!

And a couple more. Put some basecoat on the rear panels today. That’s all I can do for now til the shell’s back with the other as yet unpainted (but primed) panels - the doors, front guards, bonnet and the front panel. The front panel will have to be scored back, primed and them basecoated as the original painter painted base, pearl and clear directly onto the fibreglass just to see what the final colour would look like so it was always intended to be redone.

Well yes, after a 12 months stay at an engineers - impacted by Covid, LGA restrictions and other workload I finally got the car back today and brought it home. Next steps are to continue to fettle the rear panels and rear door fit; do some repairs to the roof, then sand back the front end and doors ready for base coat so I can finally get it into one colour.

Then to paint it, I’ve got to do a mist base coat over the whole car, then top coat and clear coat. Each have to be done as soon as possible after each other so I may end up painting the car 5-6 times over the one weekend- meant to be two coats each.
