Anyone had issues with power steering on a Fuego? Mine appears to be leaking from the seal for the steering arm on the right hand side. Can they be repaired? Can this be done in situ or does the whole rack have to come out which is a painful job?

Barry, yes they were able to be repaired quite successfully in the factory refurbishment program, however outside those programs the results in the trade that try to repair, have a very mixed success rate.

I have long wanted to get hold of the part repair kits and attempt a long lasting repair, but to date I have not been able to source components and the actual information (techniques of repair) that guarantee a lasting fix.

I will have a look and see what source data I have for kits ( there were some available in the UK at one time) there was a previous thread years back on the subject, and at that time I was willing to pay out money, even if the job failed. Just was one step behind getting or sourcing the kits, my information may be filed on a crashed computer.

Others here might have original information filed. I had the idea that Jo Proffi might have tried to get someone local to do the job. much water under the bridge since then.

Thanks Ken. The Haynes manual is no use at all. So any info out there will be helpful. Might go to Pedders at some stage or other steering specialists and see what they say.

If you have an MR 218 Manual (I think that might be the American R1360 -R1362 models) Section G10 shows the set up of the seals.
1 - piston
2-Rack bush
3-seal carrier
4-snap ring
5-O ring seal
6-Lip type seal
7- Inside lip type seal
8-square section piston ring.

I vaguely remember the problem was keeping snap ring and the seal carrier sort of glued in place so it didn't release the internal lip seal and rack bush under the internal pressure.

I could probably scan you a PDF and send it, I have your email address I have sent a copy of the page.

Hmmn sent off the email with PDF of page, was going to try and copy the page to this thread, but site seems to have lost ability to introduce a PDF file for some reason.

It so happened I have the club's MR218 manual and read thru the section on power steering. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you how to renew the seals which I think is the problem. Will be having a chat to a Renault mechanic now retired.

I now have a power steer rack supplied by a club member. After cleaning it up and removing the rubber bellows, I can see how the steering arm could be removed. According to the MR218 manual, the steering arms can be removed but need to be replaced by new ones as the removal destroys the lock nut. I noticed one end has been removed previously and has been welded in place. So I guess that is the solution if one cannot find a new steering arm with a new lock nut. Before doing that I just need to see if the steering rack leaks any power steer fluid. You can buy stop leaks or power steer fluid with stop leak added, eg from Auto One, which apparently recon the seals. Will see what happens.

The inner rod ends are available on Ebay Barry

Col looking at those prices, seems pretty attractive for new tie rod ends - I have two sets purchased from Ken Bailey when he was operating out of Box Hill - I have them reserved as spares for my Fuego and Dianne's, bought them from Caravelle many years ago, but have survived on 2nd hand up till now, and I think I might have paid more than that over the counter from Ken (not sure) Those new ones were manufactured by Santucci-sicfa under the SASIC brand & marked pieces detaches pour vehicules Francais et Etrangers, part # 3008044 - the part itself is metal branded SASIC with #'s 3 4 stamped opposite on the adjustable shank and comes complete with the spring lock washer. Each individual part apparently o.k. to use for either left or right side use. I have a year 2000 Sasic Catalogue that shows the part (#5) on page 189 as Designation Axe de bielle D/G reference Sasic #3008044 Observation R1341 depuis ch n 504401 (note after n is like a degree sign) ref. Origine SN
also they show the power steering #3 on the same page Designation Direction assistee sans rotule reference SASIC 7006104 Observation Boitier fonte de 78 a 86 Reference origine 7701351087 All under Renault 18

On page 275 there are cross references for SASIC 3008044 on page 187R 18, 193 R20, (one side only) 194 R20 (one side only)201 Ren 30 one side only) 205 Espace (one side only) 209 Renault Fuego where curiously they show the illustration #'s as 5 and 6 but list the same Sasic part #3008044 for those parts and the power steering unit as a whole is not shown, so I take it they did not remanufacture that for the Fuego.

I have been caught out a few times disposing of a spare and then needing it myself so try to keep what I have now just in case, but I have loaned out parts to get cars on the road while replacement parts come in from overseas to replace the spare I loaned - this has worked reasonably well so far.

It does look like the part is still a popular item with some Renaults Parts bin inter-changeability to other models, so should be easy to find from a reliable supplier. If you can view a later SASIC catalogue, this might confirm.

Thanks Col and Ken. Of course I need a total repair kit that includes the tie rod end but also the seal, "O" ring and a new lock nut. The ones on eBay seem to be just the tie rod end except for one listed. I wonder Ken if you have a web address for Sasic. Googled it and all I get is a SA space centre. In the meantime, I'll email the suppliers on eBay and see what they have.

Don't know if that information is current...may help I hope.

Ken.

Thanks Col and Ken. I've bought the one on eBay advertised as a R18 part that shows the seal, "O" ring and lock nut and asked the seller if he has additional units of the same for sale. Also sent emails to Sasic and carpartsinmotion who is selling similar items but asking if they include the repair items, seals etc. Will see what responses I get.

I cant count the amount of failed efforts to re-seal the leaking rack, and in the end just gave up and went for the non PAS rack.

Of course anything is possible, including a successful rebuild!!!
Good luck, jo

G'day,
I have found Nulon power steering stop leak & conditioner to be useful in the past.... :)
