Continental and General Moorabbin
Father was Supply Manager there easy
They also built Studebakers there, black car in second pic

In fact it looks like the old Chrysler factory in South Australia (Keswick I think), they assembled the Simca there from 1956 to 1964. The Simca's shown are the Aronde 90A and I see two with the unique "Tilley" side mouldings and yes there is a black Vedette "Beaulieu".

Ausdis Holdings gained the concession to assemble Simcas in June 1955. The figure of 3000 per year was quoted with an Australian content of 40%. Assembly at the rate of ten a day began in September in the plant in Macauley Rd North Melbourne built and run by an Ausdis subsidiary, Northern Engineering. Another subsidiary, Ausdis Used Cars was restructured to handle sales and distribution. It was renamed Continental and General Distributors. Later on assembly was moved to a new purpose built factory on Dougherty Road, West Heidelberg. After Chrysler took over Simca it was decided to move Simca assembly to Chrysler's Keswick plant in Adelaide. Production began there in June 1959 and by August Keswick Simcas were on the market.
The plethora of photos on the net purporting to be of Simca assembly in a plant in Moorabbin can be traced to a mislabelled file in the Museum of Victoria.
To sum up, there is no evidence of a Simca assembly works in Moorabbin. It is a confusion with the Canada Cycle and Motor Company works in Keys Rd, assembling Peugeot and Studebaker. I have never seen any reference to Simcas being assembled there under contract. That plant did come under the control of a restructured Continental and General Distributors in early 1959 after the company obtained the Australian concession for Peugeot. The changeover for Simca moving to Keswick and Peugeot and Studebaker moving to West Heidelberg took place in June 1959 with press announcements in August. As Continental and General fitted their own assembly plate to vehicles they assembled and it included the address of the plant if any Simcas were assembled in Moorabbin they will be plated as such.

Now's a good a time as any for an uplift for any Frogger's who want to have a squizz , seeing as it's almost a "confined to barracks" in the current situation. So here's the upbeat version of the first, FOR THE ARONDE FANS.

The simca in this picture has rego GWP097.
I remember my folks telling me many years later that they almost bought an Aronde....
They unfortunately bought a new Holden FC in 1958 with Rego GWP655. A lemon from the word go.

Hi everyone,
My grand father in Bordeaux (France) had an Aronde in good condition. My oncle borrowed the car to go to Germany where he had his 18 month military service. The journey is over 1000kms (No highway). He fell asleep at the wheel, just before he reached his destination. The Aronde was amazingly not very damaged and repaired in the panelbeating workshop of the garrison. But the full car was resprayed in an off white colour with a blue strip from front to back. My uncle returned home during a break. The reception he received from his father was not warm. My grand father working as an executive in a bank felt embarrassed to be seen in his car now.
My brother and I spent many happy hours playing in the car during holidays.
Cheers, Paul

Thank you for the interesting comment. The Simca was certainly very popular in Australia during the 1950's and 1960's but there are very few left nowadays.
