How tight should one of the (to me) new-fangled "flat" drive belts be? Back in the days of vee belts when that's all there was I was taught that if you could twist the belt more than 90deg in the middle of its longest run or span it was too loose. Just replaced the (flat) belt on the Honda Civic as old one was showing signs of wear & could twist that one prob'ly less than 45deg on longest run, judged that OK so put everything back after which there was horrendous squealing from the thing (until I turned aircon off).
Had to get all the tools out again, jack up, remove front wheel +access panel & hit the adjuster once more - this time forcing a socket over the wingnut under the alternator to get enough leverage to tighten the tensioner - dang those Japanese people must have strong thumbs and forefingers. Can hardly twist belt at all now, got no squeals but not sure how long the alternator / ac pump bearings are gonna last
