Well the F1 if off to a very late start. Two consequtive weekends of racing in Austria.

Practice saw number of drivers spinning out.

Qualifying results

1/ Bottas
2/ Hamilton
3/ Verstappen
4/ Norris
5/ Albon
6/ Perez
7/ Leclerc
8/ Sainz
9/ Stroll
10/ Ricciardo
11/ Vettel

Daniel Ricciardo was caught out by a late yellow flag. but still qualified ahead of Vettel  :rolllaugh:

Bottas beat Hamilton by about 1/100th of a second.

Verstappen was about 1/2 second off the pace from the Mercs in 3rd.

What was surprising to me was that 10 cars qualified within 1 seconds of Verstappen's time

Vettel (11) qualified well behind Leclerc in 7th position:mallet::drink:. Vettel did not make it to the final qualifying round.

Red Bull lodged a protest against Mercedes for their new steering system, but the protest was dismissed. There is some suggestion that Red Bull have their own version of the steering system ready to go, but wanted to clear the legality with the protest:rolleyes:

Hamilton faced the stewarts for allegedly not slowing down sufficiently under yellow flag during Q3, but video evidence indicated that both yellow and green were displayed at the same time so he was not punished.

There has been speculation that there would be a protest against the pink team (Racing Point) as their cars appear to be copies of Mercedes 2019 cars. Mercedes is not concerned about the similarity and as it is a customer team............ who knows what has been agreed to behind closed doors. Protest has not materialized yet, at least not to my knowledge.

Looks like Hamilton got a 3 place penalty for ignoring the yellow flag in Q3. I read otherwise yesterday, so don.t know what happened there.

Race Results

1/ Bottas from start to finish
2/ Leclerc
3/ Norris - + 1 point for fastest lap.
4/ Hamilton - Hamilton finished ahead of Norris but had 5 second penalty to touch with Albon which demoted him
5/ Sainz
6/ Perez
7/ Gasly
8/ Ocon
9/ Giovinazzi - the Alfa driver is needing to perform to keep his drive next year, did his chances no harm by finishing ahead of Vettel :rolllaugh:
10/ Vettel - Vettel started 11th and finished 10th... hmmm, not the first time he has struggled against top level team mate
11/ Latifi - started last but finished 11th in the Williams by virtue of the fact that he finished. All others behind him were DNF

McLaren 3rd and 5th, excellent showing from the team and drivers. Looks promising for Ricciardo next year

All the bottom ten qualifiers chose to start on medium tyres

Albon was doing well until he and Hamilton touched - DNF

Daniel Ricciardo had overheating issues DNF

Max Verstappen - engine failure DNF

Both HAAS cars had brake failures

Raikkonen lost a wheel after the second pit stop.

With the reduced season length, scoring decent points every round is more critical than normal. Verstappen failed to finish, which has to be a massive blow to any chance of winning the title this year. The other major concern is the reliability of the Honda engines. Two Honda engines failed in the first round and with a week before the next round it makes any potential fixes very difficult to achieve in the time frame

Update:-

Hamilton was cleared by judiciary on Saturday, but Red Bull became aware of a video from Hamiltons car, which showed the yellow panel (Hamilton had apparently said he did not see it). The matter was re-examined and penalty awarded 41 minutes before the start of the race.
