Race start order after qualifying

1/ Bottas by .063 secs from
2/ Hamilton
3/ Hulkenberg
4/ Verstappen
5/ Ricciardo
6/ Stroll
7/ Gasly
8/ Leclerc
9/ Albon
10/ Norris
11/ Vettel
12/ Sainz
13/ Grosjean
14/ Ocon
15/ Russell
16/ Kvyat
17/ Magnussen
18/ Latifi
19/ Giovinazzi
20/ Raikkonen

Points of interest

Ricciardo qualified in 5th

Hulkenberg impressed by qualifying in 3rd

Verstappen qualified on harder tyres than those around him, which may yield slight advantage during the race.

Vettel failed to make the Q3 again

Edit: Ocon qualified 11 the but was deemed to have blocked Russell on his quick lap and was penalised 3 starting positions so he starts from 14th. Apparently it wasn't entirely Ocon's fault, Renault team failed to warn him in time of the fast approaching Russell.

Finishing order -
1. Verstappen
2. Hamilton
3. Bottas
4. Leclerc
5. Albon
6. Stroll

Ricciardo came in 14th but his Renault team-mate Ocon was 8th, so several places up on starting place...

Your comment about Verstappen qualifying on harder tyres proved prescient. (y)

It seems tyres and preservation thereof was key again. Obviously Silverstone is pretty hard on the current rubber spec, although Leclerc managed to get home 4th with only one pit stop with everyone else needing two or three.

Thats a turn for the books

1/ Verstappen - started on hard tyres
2/ Hamilton - started on medium tyres
3/ Bottas - started on medium tyres
4/ Leclerc
5/ Albon
6/ Stroll
7/ Hulkenberg
8/ Ocon
9/ Norris
10/ Kvyat
11/ Gasly
12/ Vettel
13/ Sainz
14/ Ricciardo
15/ Raikkonen
16/ Grosjean
17/ Giovinazzi
18/ Russell
19/ Latifi
20/ Magnussen DNF

Red Bulls tyre strategy of starting on hard compound helped them score the upset win.

Both the Merc's medium tyres developed blisters which allowed Verstappen to close in on the Mercs. His team told him to ease up a little to conserve his tyres, which he surprisingly appears to have done. When the Mercs had to pit, Vertappen was able to get past them and control the race to the end. Perhaps he is finally developing some maturity.

Bottas started on medium tyres. Bottas was not happy with the race strategy as he came for new rubber ten laps before Hamilton, making it easy for Hamilton to pass Bottas on fresher tyres. He ran out of tyres towards the end allowing Max past.

Vettel managed a spin early in the race and finished 12th after qualifying 11th. Leclerc finished 4th. History is repeating itself, Leclerc is doing to Vettel what Ricciardo did to him at Red Bull.

The pink Mercs seem to do better in qualifying that they do in the race.

Edit:- Ricciardo had a spin during the race
