Hi all,
Can anyone help with ideas on how to set up a good exhaust for an mi16? at the momment its got 2 1/4in pipes, an 18in muffler, then a hotdog and another muffler at the rear( not the standard one, one exhaust shop said it was a certain type another said it was a different type) I know a guy that makes his own stainless pipes and mufflers in his spare time, he recently did the bosses porsche and BMW and they look and sound great. hes not sure what to do with mine?
Any help would be great

I made my own stainless steel exhaust system for a 205 gti 1.9 8V
It consisted of a original cast iron factoy manifold then a custom made downpipe into a high flow cat then straight pipe to a Dynamax Ultraflow stainless steel muffler
All pipes were in 304 stainless steel

Now to be honest it droned at about 100kph
And was a bit to load
I then completed another system that i was not happy with either
It consisted of copy Genie stainless mufflers
They are called Turbo tuff
I wouldn't bother with those mufflers if you come across them they are rubbish
I am now halfway through a turbo setup and i am starting all over again
This time i am going to be using 316L stainless steel in mix with 304
Hope some of this info will help you what i am trying to tell u is if u only use one muffler and a cat make sure u use a very high quality muffler or it will be to loud
But i think u are not using a cat
I have been making exhaust systems and turbo setups for a while
IT depends what u will tolerate in noise
I can handle a bit of noise as long as it does not drone
Email me or post back and let me know what u want your exhaust to do and what u can tolerate in noise
Tell me if your engine standard or modified
My 205 with a euro engine a good exhaust system has easily beaten a 2.2 Vtec honda prelude (Exhaust is very important)

Depends on your budget. If you're really keen get some new longer primaries made up. If you're happy to stick with the stock headers, check the cat. is clean, then toss out the rest. The stock pipe looks like a 2.25", but it's actually double skinned. A new 2.25" pipe is plenty big enough from the cat. all the way through. Add a new 2.25" resonator behind the cat., and get the pipe mandrel bent to clear the rear suspension. The std. pipe is pretty ugly here. I haven't seen a rear muffler I'm 100% happy with yet. I couldn't care less what they look like as long as they are a good compromise between hp and dB. The stock one isn't all that bad. If you've only got 148hp I'd stick with stock. If you've got more hp planned you'll need to get one custom made. It has to be a big sucker to do the job properly i.e. volume not diameter.

The engine is stock.....for now. Plan to do some work later. The exhaust on it at the moment isnt stock, im just sick of the crappy mufflers they put on it, 4 months down the track a baffle always drops, the car vibrates like hell and feels like shit to drive, they put a new one on feels like a new car for a few weeks and the process repeats itself.
It sounds pretty good now, not too loud, but tends to be a bit harsh above 100km.
i want something that wont be too loud not like those dicks that drive around in excels and lancers with storm water pipes hangin out the back, oh and the cats still on, i just want a subtle note, that will be quiet on the freeway

Sorry for the slow reply
If u are going to get your friend to make u a complete system make sure he uses stainless steel wool inside those stainless steel mufflers
80% of stainless steel mufflers are cosmetic and are a mild steel muffler on the inside with fiberglass packing as noise absorption then this is raped in a nice shiny stainless steel skin
This is why those mufflers u mention sound great for six months and then they sound crap due to the fiberglass packing burning
Look for a core with plenty of holes to expose the gas to as much packing as possible
Above mufflers do cost a fair bit of money but u do get what u pay for (Most of the time)
There are also rebuildable ones made of carbon fibre and stainless steel
I myself like your friend will be making stainless steel exhaust systems when i buy a pro welder from the states
I am studying to be a T.I.G welding specialist
in a aviation certified school and have almost completed an advanced diploma in engineering (welding Stream)
Your best bet will be to get your friend to make u a complete system as it will be much cheaper
The prices for some products i used goes something like this
Dynamax stainless steel muffler $230
High flow cat $220
Stainless is very expensive especially in mandrel bends
But if built and welded correctly will last the life of the vehicle and add value to your car.
