degreaser

$12 a litre at Bunnings. That's not expensive if you use a spray bottle. It isn't much different from petrol so don't be silly with it.

My local $2 shop (Bargain Base) sells the Export degreaser, as well as Motorcraft and one other brand. I bought some on Saturday to spruce up a car for an annual rego check.

I was referring to this stuff. There was a post worrying about cost.

I wonder if the export stuff is just that in a pressure pack... I've always thought it was maybe kero

I doubt it. Shellite is solvent naptha, which evaporates away. It is also toxic if you get it too long on your skin, or in your eyes, or swallowed.

Burns very clean in Primus stoves too. Expensive from Bunnings by the bottle I'd have thought - is there a bulk source for Shellite?

20L drums at many cleaners' supply places. Also at places like this-

Got plenty of export in Bendigo A1 autoparts. Sell it by the box and also have hi-tec brand foam spray type.

SCA seem to list 2 different canned degreasers. 'Workshop' and 'Heavy duty' - I've used the 'Heavy duty' with reasonable success - I think the last time I bought it there was a 4 for $10 deal on, but now that I think about it I used to use the Expost stuff and maybe that was a little stronger.

Cheers

I found myself a new favorite parts store. I noticed driving upto total tools the other day A1 autoparts.

I went in to see if they have any solvent degreaser ... and asked about export degreaser as I still reckon its brilliant. He tells me exports sold under several names ... and points to the auto-spec degreaser on the shelf for $4.00 a tin. I sprayed a bit into the cap ..... Yep, export degreaser. I also grabbed a set of long spanners from there ( 1/3rd the price of the cheapest spanners at total tools... they ring like a bell when you drop them ... so I would say the quality is quite good).

They also sell useful stuff, not flashiing LEDs and air freshners/polish like the parts stores do these days.

They are outlets that use a common supplier for better buying, trade oriented.

I use a similar group in Sydney, These places are worth finding. The giveaway is little retail oriented display and a large counter with the staff behind it all on the phone serving the mechanics in the area.

We still need the specialist suppliers of French car parts as well.

I heard a story from the owner of my place. A Japanese cars dealer chief mechanic warned a customer against buying a cheaper nasty clutch at the place. The shop owner was incensed when he was told, and took one of his aftermarket clutches down to the mechanic to compare with a factory clutch. You guessed - both were identical OEM stuff including stampings which I think the shop owner knew in advance.

What impressed me most was the old car parts were in stock. trim clips, bumper bolts, a small selection of patch panels even for common older aussie cars. I'm quite keen on a set of tiny classic rear view mirrors they had there ... they'd look great on the traction and don't require holes to be drilled. Yeah, the people behind the counter were obviously motor trade people (I'm including the women in that too).

Mum once told me that it was used during the war for motor bikes in lieu of hard to get petrol. She remembers disposing of the bottles whilst a pillion passenger, things parents admit in weak moments !!

Where do you buy the cheap drums of solvent type parts cleaner these days (the type you put in parts washers). Ican't seem to find it anywhere locally. I don't want to use the alkaline stuff, I don't reckon its anywhere near as good ...... and its, well ... .alkaline :clown:

I want to try some solvent based cleaner in the ultrasonic cleaner when I do carbies in it ... :)

I usually buy mine from the local truck spare parts place. It is called Mr Filter up here in NSW.
They seem to have a lot more of the bulk type solvents, oils etc

BTW: the cheap export degreaser. this is why it is wwaaaaayyyyy better than every other degreaser I've tried. the bunnings website has the safety sheets for it

its a proper solvent based degreaser. Can you buy 20litre drums of this stuff ?

That sez it's basically shellite like seasink suggested (60%).
Not sure what the butane is doing in there.
It is the Ethanolamine thay dissolves the greasy stuff, and it is alkaline.
