I need a chrome-plated bonnet badge with script "Citroen" for the restoration of my RHD 1963 ID19. The one from my car is so corroded that it is un-salvageable (photo attached). I have tried to follow up on previous posts suggesting that GilbertHenry had some made some time ago, but have not managed to get a response. Does anyone have or know how to obtain a good original or re-manufactured badge? Apparently these badges were unique to the Slough produced right hand drive cars.

I got a couple from Franzose a while back, they are stainless and a bit sharp on the corners, could do with a polish.

Thanks Brian. The only Bonnet badges I can find on Franzone are lower case "Citroen" script. My badge is actually upper case "CITROEN" per Slough production. Did you purchase upper case badges from Franzone, or the lower case ones?

It might be worth talking to and sending a couple of photos to A-Class Finishers in Adelaide. They have done a really nice job on chrome parts for me previously. Nothing lost - worst case they tell you the badge is too far gone...

Thanks for the suggestion. I have spoken to 3 chrome platers so far. They are not optimistic about replating die cast zinc and say that pit and blisters will immediately occur. My casting is very badly pitted. I'm thinking a new one would be a better option in this case. Nonetheless I could try A-class as they may have a better system for dealing with die cast zinc.

Hi Geoff,

Many Citroën enthusiasts view the subtle changes in the Slough-assembled Citroëns (to achieve the local content) – as less desirable or pure, than the corresponding French design. Their comparative rarity doesn’t have a direct correlation with desirability. Obviously, not everyone sees it that way though.

The previous owners of your vehicle wrestled with what Slough components should be retained versus what should be changed to the original design or “French” fitment.

Now some people just love personalising their cars with as many Citroën badges as a 2.0 litre car can carry…. I hope you get some buy-in from others – but you may need to plan for a smaller run on these.

Regards,
Rhys

I have contacted a specialist in die casting car badges using the investment casting method. The cost is reasonable on a per item basis - but they make a minimum quantity of 30 units. I would have to find others who also want a new badge of this design,...

Of course you could always tackle it yourself, have a look at the investment casting process on youtube, looks simple enough.

Hi Rhys,

I understand the issue about French-correct versus "as delivered for UK market". The elegance of the original French design with no badges other than a double chevron on the boot is no doubt the ultimate... Nonetheless, my car is a right hand drive model, and I am making decisions about originality for its restoration, bearing in mind all the issues. I have decided to restore its Slough Spec number plate surround (similar to attached image), as this is what came with the car, works well with current number plates, and I have the actual original parts of my car, which includes the original bonnet with the badge in question,... Meanwhile, I'll still have all French market parts for the front bumper and bonnet kept in the back of the garage...

I have a set of the accessory foglights shown in the image too, but I have decided not to fit them my car.

I may get a single reproduction badge CNC-ed up in brass,...

Hi Geoff,

I‘m not provoking you to justify your direction – just explaining why you’re likely to receive a limited response.

As someone who manufactures a variety of parts & tools for classic cars……. I like to see initiatives supported when people make things for the common good.

What about a 3d printed version that could then be cast, even a 3d plastic version chromed?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have done some casting but casting metal with the lost wax method is something I would prefer to leave to those set up with the right tools and processes. I do have a quote from a specialist to re-cast 30 units, which is reasonable on a per unit basis but expensive initially as I just need one,...

I have looked it 3D printing for casting purposes. It certainly could work, but if I get a 3D computer model of the part I'm more tempted to get the part CNC milled out of solid brass - which can then be directly chrome-plated.

Hello Geoffrey,
I'm just wondering what the quote was with a minimum of 30 units.
My son took over the casting side of things some time ago and often it is not worth casting as the overhead expenses have risen- - re raw materials etc plus the extra work after coming out of the mould. Our price used to be 28.50 but we haven't had any for a while.
I'm wondering how our last price compares with your quote as investment casting might be cheaper than our lost wax system.
You can click this for the product my son can do, these are in bronze ---

John,

The quote I got from Mastercast was $550.00 + GST. to make the mould, the commitment to buy a minimum of 30 units at $35.00 ea. + GST. Material was to be zinc, Chromium plated finish. I'm not sure about the exact casting process, but they were factoring on creating a new CAD model for the badge as mine was so badly corroded as to not be a good master. I think the price quoted was reasonable, except I only need one badge... I am pleased to know about the reproduction badges you made previously. I have ordered on in polished bronze which I will get chrome plated.

Geoffrey
