Citroen C5 2013 head unit.

Hi Andrew, where is brisbane do you live?

Cheers, Ken
Hi Ken, I'm in Dutton Park. Are able to assist? I'm happy to travel to you. I see a few other people here have the exact same problem and say it was fixed with a new SD card. Hoping I can have the same luck...!

You guys on the forum are wizards. Just put in the new SD card, update the firmware (albeit with a Peugeot logo popping up on boot) and added the maps. Everything seems to function - saves a lot of money and keeps the original appearance

thanks to all contributors..

Andy

Hi Ken, Are you avail at all to guide through this upgrade? v keen to chat! cheers, Andrew

Andrew,

I have started a conversation with you. Can you access it ? It is the envelope symbol beside your login name at the top of the screen.

Good point Ken, and it appears as though the lack of PM for new members is two-way, as I can't seem to PM him.

Hi, Andrew, here’s what worked for me (and others who I've PM’d here):

Your issues could be due to a failing SD card which I suspect is what was wrong with mine. It will need swapping out which means removing the headunit. That's pretty straightforward with the right radio removal keys. Just disconnect the battery, withdraw the headunit and unplug everything. A tip that would have helped me - put the gear selector in drive before disconnecting the battery - the unit will not clear the gear lever if it's in park! I hate to plug another forum, but if you need more detailed instructions on removing and opening the headunit, try this: https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=71954

You'll need a new SD card, I used one of these: https://www.bigw.com.au/product/emtec-micro-sd-card-16gb/p/8380723

Pull the old card, insert the new one (do not connect this new one to any PC beforehand), and reinstall the headunit. You’ll need a firmware CD suitable for your headunit. This will write data (but not maps) to the SD card to get you started. I made my own CD using an iso image, and it worked for me. Once this is done, you should have a bunch of headunit functions restored - this seems to vary car to car (I had pretty much everything, like parking sensors, sat nav (but without maps), radio, reversing camera etc).

Here you have a choice: attempt to use mirascript to pull config from your old SD card (which may or may not work, depending on how damaged your card is), or press on without changing anything. I did the latter. I could successfully open some partitions of my old SD card, so maybe the script could have helped me. Then add the maps:

I ended up downloading the zipped map files (not massive, at around 300Mb), and then used a little script to generate activation codes. I'm not precisely sure how it works, but it interrogates a file within the zipped map files, and then I assume it combines your VIN (which you enter), and generates a code that is based on your VIN. When installing, I guess the headunit accepts this code, decodes it to determine a match to your VIN, and then permits installation of the maps. In my case, I generated the code, but my headunit never asked for it (for someone else it did though, and this step worked). I think this is because the new install of firmware on my RT6 (based on the iso file) was either modified to remove the need for a code, or the latest version simply doesn't ask for a code.

You can find a link to the code generator here, or I am happy to run it for you (just need your VIN): https://www.peugeotforums.com/threads/smeg-map-and-speed-camera-update-procedure.168681/page-122

I downloaded the latest map (2019) from the PSA website: http://psa.download.navigation.com/automotive/PSA/RT6-SMEGx/M49RG20-Q0320-7111.ZIP

The map data suits various headunits, mine is an RT6. You must use the key generator on the right map file for your headunit (pasted from https://www.navitotal.com/peugeot-c...meg-smeg-smeg-iv2-wip-nav-t21113.html#p172157):

For SMEG systems: /SMEG_UPG/DATA/CCT.DAT.inf and press the GENERATE button, write down the activation code that will appear.
For SMEG + systems: /SMEG_PLUS_UPG/DATA/CCT.DAT.inf and press the GENERATE button, write down the activationcode that will appear.
For SMEG iv2 systems: /SMEG_IV2_UPG/DATA/CCT.DAT.inf and press the GENERATE button, write down the activationcode that will appear.
For RT6 systems: /CCT.DAT.inf (use the ROOT directory file) and press the GENERATE button, write down the activationcode that will appear.

RECOMMENDATION: GET THE 4 POSSIBLE CODES, WRITE THEM IN. I HAVE TESTED THEM IN THE CAR UNTIL YOU GET THE CORRECT ONE (with this you will avoid going up and down to the garage when the code fails you)

PS: When the code fails it gives the following message "Check the version of the cartography and / or the activation key"

After getting your activation codes copy the contents of that zipped folder (not the folder itself - should have 13 files and 6 folders) to an empty FAT32-formatted USB drive, and plug it into your car (in the centre console for my car), then start the car. The headunit will identify it as map data, and ask you if you want to update it. Enter code (if asked), then keep the car running and wait for it to finish. Australian map data is in two zones (WA and the rest) - I didn't bother with the WA data, and the east coast map data probably only took 10-15 mins to copy across. I have heard that too big a USB drive will cause problems, so avoid Tb plus sizes, and try to dig out an old 2/4/8 Gb USB instead!

Good luck,

Dave
Hi Dave, Wondering if I can pick this up again and have a go at it. There is so much I don't understand or know what to do - can I get you to, ie " a script to generate the codes" ... not sure where to start here. Any thoughts? Can I get you to create the CD and I reimburse costs, postage etc? Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I am still gathering all the files for firmare and maps and preparing a USB stick to run the mira scripts and getting the code generator going so I can generate the activation codes for the map installs.

Hopefully I will be ready to help you next week.

Cheers, Ken

Oh wow Ken, brilliant stuff - I have a brand new SD card and USB stick here if that helps - both 32gb. I texted you last Fri so you have my number - v keen to see how this plays out! I'm away all next week, so no rush - back on 9 March. I downloaded a couple of files (M49RG20-Q0220-2001 & M49RG20-Q0320-7111) that Dave mentioned - but I'm not sure what they are or what to do with them.
Thank you! Andrew

Andrew, it looks like Ken is all over it, so I'll leave you in his capable hands. If you get stuck, give me a yell, as I am happy to help.

Hi Dave,
I'm almost ready to have a go at Andrew's headunit. I am just about to run the keygen on my laptop that has java installed to get the installation codes for Andrews car. However I have a question about firmware versions?

When yours boots up does it say Peugeot or Citroen? Seeing I got my 2.86 firmware off a Peugeot Site, I think it will say Peugeot. If yours says Citroen, can we arrange to get a copy of your firmware to me please.

Cheers, Ken

Hi Ken, mine had the Peugeot logo too, so I imagine I ran the same version as you. My local Citroen service centre was able to change it over though. I wanted them to restore the rear camera parking grid lines, but that was too difficult in the end - I wasn't too bothered about the Peugeot logo!

Well you inspired me to try to return those reversing lines, and to fix the rear camera colours (this hasn't been right since I did my SD card swap). After many hours of trying to understand mirascripts and how the RT6 manages user configs, I got there. While I don't know that this will work for all, it did for me.

I took my old SD card, and did a copy to a PC. I started browsing the three directories it gave me, and found a bunch of .dat files for user_com, user_config etc in one of them. Using the DAT viewer from the mirascripts page, I was able to look at the fields in these files. I then used the mirascript (just the RT6_USERCOM.cmd one) to pull the current configs from the car onto a fresh USB. When I compared the two user_config.dat files they were largely the same (obeying the same format), but there were different values for some fields, 1.23.403-406. The DAT viewer provided doesn't permit editing of all the values, and the ones I really wanted to try to change were titled "AVR" (contrast, chroma, brightness and importantly for me, AVR_Picture_Template). Because I couldn't change these in the DAT viewer, and because the two DAT files were the same format, I decided to try to push the old configs (unedited) back into the car.

On the USB drive that pulled the new settings from the car, I simply replaced the 7 files it created with the exactly the same named files from my old SD card. Note I did backup everything though, in case this failed, and I religiously removed Windows system files before inserting the USB in the car. If that didn't work, I was going to reinstall the previous settings, and then try to reuse the previous settings with only the old user_config.dat file (keeping the other 6 unchanged).

The script asked if I wanted to write to the RT6, I selected yes, and after a reset (via the eject button) I was back in business - rear reversing lines now visible on the screen, and the camera colour will have to wait until daylight, although I am optimistic! I also believe that had I done this originally, and not taken the car to the Citroen dealer (not that they charged me, which was very decent of them), this method would have returned my Citroen logo instead of the Peugeot one.

Just adding to the knowledge base here regarding aftermarket displays in x7 c5s.

My 2009 c5 had a failing display. The install of this unit from Aliexpress was fairly painless. The steering wheel controls still work, and the actual unit itself is quite smooth and easy to use, unlike some earlier generation aftermarket displays I have used.

The seller was responsive and useful in helping with some of the questions I had for the install process.

this was the model - I went for the Z7 spec.

With these units you do lose the OEM ambient temperature readout, correct ...?

Correct. I only realized after driving the car today.
Yeah, different for everyone but for me the ambient temp's always priority for me ... I recall some Joying unit may actually display the car's OEM ambient temp. Why can't manufacturer's just leave the temp display in the driver's binnacle ...
