Cals Cars

Hi Cal,

A very enjoyable read, thanks for the update on all your endeavours. I must say it’s excellent to see stories of road going adventures. Keep it coming [emoji106]

cheers
Craig

Yeah great read Cal and good to see some real fun going on. I need to come over when you get the Mi back and get that Si rack off you.

Got back on the 404 this afternoon for a couple hours after work.
I got a good rear end a little while back and had a look at options this evening, I was hoping to just swap across the brakes, but it seems it is from a later model and is larger, it also has what looks to be a bias valve that my car does not.
Wondering now weather to swap across the whole axle, or just the brakes.
While I was at it, I have pulled a stub axle to see how it all goes together, the bearing is tight and good but there was oil leaking out, I assume the bearing needs to come away to change the shaft seal? And are they still available?

The diff won't fit your car, the bolt spacing and size on the front is wrong for your torque tube. Do you have the torque tube that comes with the new diff? You can buy axle seals anywhere, need to pull the bearing off with a puller , also replace the shrink ring. Doesn't look too bad maybe just clean up, there is a special hole for oil to escape. I may have a late torque tube available or even an early diff although they probably went with the 403 parts clean out. 203 clean out happens now that the 203 has gone, will now just concentrate on the 404 for my early car.

No tube for the new diff, though my original one seems to be fine anyways.

Back to sourcing wheel cylinders and using all the original rear end, must need a unique puller to get the bearing off? i hate to pull it all apart but the seal is leaking pretty badly.

Couldn't sleep last night so at 130am i was reading the thread, well done, really looking forward to hearing more about the turbo 505 wagon, sounds like a right sleeper!

A couple of little teasers, both have had little hold ups but stoked to see the 205 back on its wheels and the 505 officially turbocharged

I love that clean look of no oil leaks in the 505 !

Nice work... I have been wondering what thoughts Bill has to offer on the Douvrin, now that he has built a hot one.

Not as much as I do Beano.............'Cecil' my '84 STi seems to specialise in them despite new gaskets hither & yon. Would love to have Cal's hardware under the bonnet! :roflmao:

Ya gotta track em down and kill em, dude !

Degrease and find some, then fix.

When more oil appears, degrease again and after driving a day or two, look with a torch at night....it reveals much more than during day.

Using gasket-grade silicone with every gasket helps, too.

Well!
A good couple of months have been had, a few weeks back, my brother Sean and I toured up to Sydney to the French car day and met with my 205GTI again after a little time apart. We had a fantastic day and where able to put plenty of faces to names and can not stress how welcoming and friendly you northern folks are, a massive thank you to all who took the time to say hello and have a chat.
The 205 commanded interest and the was rarely time for myself to get around it!
It took the award for best modified Peugeot, and what a way to kick of its rebirth!

I will be taking it to the Haunted Hills hill-climb next weekend for its first outing and will be sure to get some video of it,not for any spectacular driving demonstration, but for the noise!

The little SI has lived through yet another rally, the HRA Magical Ironbark Tour, I managed to convince my good friend Harry to sit in the smart seat, whilst we didnt do the car, nor the event justice, we did have an absolute blast!
The navigation was frankly beyond us, understandably given our severe lack of experience, but there where some fantastic roads, and two closed sections really gave me a chance to punish the little car, huge thanks to all that made it happen, and to Harry for battling the instructions no matter how frustrating.
Api also got out there in the 405 and got it sideways at every chance!, Graham W too
Sean maned the camera and gave us a few shots

I have also collected Graham W's ex Rally 205 to rebuild to have a play in the AUS-RX series

205 maxis old trailer still getting a workout. This trailer was built in 1975, what stories it could tell. We will get the old rally car going with the old stock Si motor out of my club sport car, was a bit smoky, but will run well enough to give RX a try out in November. I will be entering a 405 Mi16 in the new RX2 class for cars without cages, two cars at a time, not 6.

That's pretty much identical max power and torque to mine on the same dyno - I got 110.6kw or 148.3hp with Peter T's stage 1 cams and standard throttle body and about 11.5:1 static CR. However your torque curve is fatter in the midrange - you look to be almost 10hp up on me at 4500rpm!

What did you end up doing to your engine?

MUCH better than my 1.9 Mi16 with ITBs in midrange. Similar power at top end.

Peters stage 1 cams, and Huws 42mm ITB set-up still running more or less standard compression.
I think the TBs are having a fairly profound effect, and in combination with the light flywheel, response is insane.

I'm not sure how keen I'd be on the ITBs for more of a street car, I think the fly magnifies it too.

For interest sake I stuck it on the weigh bridge at work, 903KG with a half tank.

My club SI is 800, so a 100kg penalty for the cage and what would be twice the power now of the 1.6

Great to see it back, loving the look of the s1 dash switches. I tried to do the same thing, but I left the heater controls so it doesn’t look anywhere near as clean.

Might have to get a bit more safety kit and see what this “rallycross” is about.
Got something to bring out for Graham’s Autocross Tour late September?
