Bx 16v speedo problem

My speedo has an intermittent problem. It will be working fine as you drive along, the needle not even wobbling around much, then suddenly the needle will drop to the bottom as if the cable had broken or a connection had failed. Then maybe the next time you take off from the lights, the speedo will be working fine again until 2km or maybe 20 km down the road the needle will drop to the bottom again.

I can't afford to drive around in Victoria without a working speedo.

Does anyone have any ideas?

You're about to snap a speedo cable. You'll find it's fractured where it goes into the speedo head. There's a guy down your way who makes up speedo cables and will do one for a 16V for less than a genuine one.
Peter Routley had one made 3 inches longer than the original so as to take some of the strain off the fitting at the head.
To fit, seperate under the bonnet at the connection, remove the glove box, clock and speedo binnacle. Strap the new cable to the old one using duct tape and drag the new one through to the speedo end. Take the speedo head and spray silicone release spray (not WD40 or similar - has to be silicone spray) into the area where the cable fits and work the section the inner cable fits into with a small driver until it is free. Then connect the new cable. Hold the outer cable to the brace behind the speedo head using a zip tie and then feed the cable through the grummet in the floor, again using the silicone spray to make it slip through easier, and rejoin the new cable to the lower cable at the connection.
Check out the route of the cable and as a suggestion, use small zip ties to hold foam underfelt to the cable where it passes over hard plastic areas such as air ducts. Refit clock, glove box and speedo binnacle.
That will cure it permanently and the speedo will sit stable from then on.
