A question about the 6 speed automatic transmission AW_TF-80SC in my 2008 Peugeot 407 HDi 2.0 RHR: Due to the previous owner neglectfully removing the heat exchange unit (to which I was unaware when I bought the car), the transmission has packed it in. There is a P0771 error code. I was hoping this was just a solenoid but it won’t go into any forward gears. Only reverse works. I was advised that it's unlikely to be just a solenoid and it will probably need a replacement transmission or rebuild. It’s done 180,000km. I know these transmissions are fitted in a number of cars eg., Ford Focus, Volvo C30 etc. Does anybody know if a second hand transmission out of one of these other vehicles (with the same engine transmission combo) will be an easy plug and play fit for a general mechanic eg., a Repco workshop for example. Or is there Peugeot specialist computer programming needed in an install from a different make of car. (Graeme)

I'd be careful getting a box from another car make or model. The DW10B and DW10C engines use the same gear ratios, but DW12 and PSA petrol engines differ. Perhaps other makes differ too, as well as matching the connections to the engine. I have no info on diff ratios

Has the OBD reading been done by Diagbox? Often other readers can't fully read the transmission ECU. P0771 is an all-makes generic code.

This mob may be able to help. They have yards at Sydney and Tuggerah and dismantle Pugs and Cits. Either make will do if the engine type matches.

Is the oil burnt? That would be a bad sign and probably your cue to find another complete gearbox with a cooler fitted. There is a chance you would get away with replacing just the valve block, but that would leave you without the expensive cooler. You'd want to look up at least the diff ratio as that can change between applications, even if the rest of it is common. This may help:

Thanks guys. You’ve answered my question. Probably safest if I stick to Peugeot suppliers. Thanks for the link Seasink.

Their website has a box from an RHH 2011 Citroen C5 for $1000. Check the mounting holes shown in the photo.

You should really check whether it has enough fluid in it and that it's not burnt before condemning it. If the cooler was deleted, are you certain it's not been leaking?

I assume you mean this one from a black C5.

Note the gearbox coding is 20GF13 and by VIN the gearbox is part# 2231L9. It's an AM6C1 with diff ratio CP 15 X 53. You want to check your earlier 407 to see what it has, but I think it will be a slightly different gearbox.
