Notice no semaphores. Never seen an Australian assembled 203 with blinkers instead of semaphores. Not even the few sold in 1957 and the car from Geelong that claimed to be the last CCM assembled 203, actually built in 1957. Of course the 1956 and 1957 models were assembled from kits that were at least a year old.

The late Basil Moran admiring an Australian decouvrable. Basil bought a blue one from Canada Cycle and Motor Co in 1952 and always regretted selling it. The model was not a success in Australia and CCM ended up using an unsold car for spares. An open roof on the Riviera on a summers day was rather different to the flies, dust and hot sun of Australia and Australian motorists liked a closed steel roof. The cheapest cars on the market were always roadsters with hoods that leaked and perspex sidescreens so the perception was of a poverty model.

Ah....but on a hot moonlit night, the experience of an open roof is heavenly !

A Peugeot 203 Cabriolet from a beautiful family tradition

A heritage passed down from father to son ...

Peugeot 203 Cabriolet RG 1955

By : Emmanuel Rolland

Presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1947, the Peugeot 203 revived the activity of the French manufacturer. It was declined in several versions thereafter: after the sedan, then the convertible sedan, the 203 Cabriolet in turn made its appearance at the Paris Motor Show of 1951. It was built in 2,567 units, its production being stopped in October to make way for the new 403.
Garage mechanic in the Mulhouse region, Roger Dillmann acquired a copy of the Peugeot 203 Cabriolet produced in 1955 and undertook major transformation work which lasted nearly two years in order to sharpen it for competition: greatly reduced, with a refined line , the car was also equipped with a compressor which gave it a power of a hundred horsepower. Heavily modified, this 203 "Special" RG (for Roger Dillmann) was even approved for its time.

Dillmann was thus able to register for the start of the very first edition of the side race at Turckheim, which he finished in an excellent fourth place amidst around sixty competitors entered. Subsequently, the Mulhouse mechanic decided to abandon the compressor which was too martyring to the mechanics, but the results were affected and, after ten or so races contested at the end of the 1950s, the adventure stopped there.

Subsequently, the car would be stored in the back of the garage of the latter for many years, before being stored in a barn for two decades. A few years ago, it was thus promised to be scrapped but was saved from this sad fate by Roger Ott, the former mechanic of Roger Dillmann, who naturally turned to Gérard Dillmann, the latter's son, to hand over the beautiful in condition.
Car mechanic himself, recognized restorer of old vehicles, but also a racing driver in his time (Formula 3, Sport prototype, Andros Trophy in particular, and a start at the 24 Hours of Le Mans 1993) Gérard Dillmann was thus harnessed in his turn to a colossal task on a car considerably worn by time.

Coming soon?

By dint of stubbornness and countless hours of work, the Peugeot 203 Cabriolet "RG" came back to life in 2018. Exhibited as part of the Mulhouse Old Vehicle Festival, it also joined the ranks of the Grand Basel show , in the Swiss city, last September. If its restaurateur and current owner intends to continue to bring out the fruit of his father's labor, and his, on the roads at the wheel for a while, he is preparing to sell it within a few years.
For the record, this car was also out for the wedding of Gérard Dillmann's son, a certain Tom Dillmann, an international-caliber driver, and today a player in the Formula E electric championship. The family history continues. .

The bodies of the 203 and 403 cabriolets were hand made but did Peugeot contract them out? The 204/304 cabriolet bodies were made by Chausson.

Back to the convertible - a handful of RHD cars were made, as evidenced by Alec Chapman's green cabriolet he used as a daily driver. The 403 cabriolet was also made in RHD in tiny numbers. Nearly twice the price of the sedan in the UK. Two cars were being offered by English dealers but Distributors Peugeot may have had more. Not known in Australia except for the 1964 registration of a 403C in the ACT. May have been a diplomatic car, may have been LHD and as it seems to have left no trace could have been re-exported.

as part of a "barn-find" job lot causing a 5-page thread started by romuald31 last september;

which ended in tears mid November;

'...Les bas de caisse et longerons sont rouillés et perforés.

That explains the asking price. The good part is, the damaged panels are now readily available to someone who has the time, inclination and money to undertake the required repairs.
