ok does a bigger air cleaner breath better than a smaller one ?
i'd say it would but what do you guys think ?

what i have is an air cleaner from an escort on the 604 with a weber under it
i have at present cold air plumbed into it but i think it is restriciting air flow
i am thinking of modifying an original air cleaner and plumbing cold air into the larger opening on it and having the original hot air without flap open so as to still have air to enter when cold air isn't bieng induced whilst moving
what do you guys think ?

the OEM 2L air cleaner on the escort is one of the more restrictive parts. The funnel narrows down to less than the carby can suck up. Hence the normal mod was to drill few 25mm holes on the rear wall of the cleaner. Noticable difference in throttle response.

When it comes to 604 cleaners I have no idea what they look like. I'm just a babe in the woods so to speak. ;)

take note that the trumpet on the air cleaner hangs down the back of the engine in the right hand rear corner of the engine bay looking from the front of the car
so in reallity the air cleaner sucks in hot air from behind the engine
my thoughts are that to run cold air to the trumpet and have normal air coming in through the hot air hole with flap removed so that town running the car still sucks in air albeit hot and out of town running the car has cold air induction from the modified cold air intake
where i am going to run the cold air from yet i don't know as i am going to have to have a good look around the front of the car
i will try to run at least 100mm diameter plumbing hoping that that will be enough cooler air forced into the air cleaner

amazing how similar it looks to the esky intake, except with the droopy nasal passage. ;)

if you look around for the V6 VN commodore intake they are about 80mm inside diameter and come in a convinient straight piece with a rubberised boot. They should be fairly cheap from the wreckers. My dad modified one to suit the V6 he has in his Rangie and wrapped it in foil to keep radiant heat out.

On the ther hand I am seriously looking at plumbing supplies for the Swift intake piping i will do in few weeks. Im sure it will look less than pro but i love the selections of different angles available for me to play with . Ahh back to Lego days !

:spanner:

ok here are some more of my thoughts
instead of having the use of the hot air for town running i'll leave it flapped and blanked off and run a bell mouth on the droopy intake and run a cold air shute to within around 100-150mm of it so when driving at speed out of town the air coming up the shute should be caught by the bell mouth and into the filter intake and normal town running the bell mouth will still have enough area around it to suck in enough air for the carb
i have drawn a rough diagram of what i mean
you are more than welcome to tell me i'm way off track :D

Do you have a V6?
Im not sure what 604 engine combo is so please excuse my ignorance.

Have you considered a Brock VH V8 cold air intake?
The thing apparently works a treat specially in a V configuartion engines. Basically its a flat panel that sits between the radiator support and the carby and is held down by :
1 mounting bolts on the radiator support
2 round air cleaner element on the carby (the panel sits between the carby and the element with appropriate holes to let the air in)
3 veritical side walls with rubberised sleeve that creates an isolation from the engine once the bonnet is closed.

At the time the VH had a very small engine bays and the V8 wasnt the coolest thing around. A lot of vapour locks, rough idle, poor fuel economy and starting problems when hot were solved by this contraption by isolating the carby from the hot ambient air under the bonnet.

your drawing:
so in effect you are extendingt he funnel closer to the road where the air is colder than inside the engine bay?
Wont the turbulance under the car prevent clean airflow?

more ideas:
Is there a way of creating a high pressure area and directing it towards the air cleaner? say in the area where the wipers are? VL V8's had a cold air pick up from there with a air cleaner having connecting panel through the metal part of the firewall that led to area where the interior fan picks up the air. (the GMH history on froggy forum  )

i'll be running a bell mouth at the end of the cold air pick up from under the car to gather as much cool air as i can
the pipe running up to near the mouth on the air cleaner will be 100mm pipe
i'm going to modify the mouth on the original air cleaner so it has a larger mouth on it
the 604 has a 90deg V6 in it so room is at a premium
there isn't a lot of room to get a cold air up into the gravel tray at the front of the car beneath the bumper as the A/C condensor is in the way there otherwise i would stick the mouth there to gather cool air from out in front of the engine
i also have to think of water from the road as well as V6 engines tend to not like too much of it up around the top of them
tends to drown plugs lol
the air at the back of the engine tends to be a bit cooler than right behind the radiator but not by much as the exhaust is also running down each side as well
what i am thinking is any cool forced or semi-forced air when at speed is going to be better than nothing untill i stick the injection on the car and then play again with cool air induction for it
different air cleaner once again then

ok story so far
i took the cold air off the ford air cleaner and the car ran better around town
i then removed the ford air cleaner and replaced it with the larger original 604 air cleaner with the droopy nose heading down the back of the engine and the car was better again over the ford air cleaner
all i have to do now is work out with the limited room down there to get some cooler air directed towards the snorkel
the other thing i will play with tomorrow weather permiting is the electric choke on the carb
as i haven't put the electronic ignition on the car just yet i still have twin coils and i hooked the choke wire up to coil B instead o coil A
plus i want to adlust the choke idle speed so that hopefully should be all taken care of tomorrow
this is only a stop gap measure till i get around to putting the injection on the car
