Hi

does anyone know if the DS clocks are repairable? I've seen a few quartz replacements on ebay but not as elegant face.

Thanks

Matthew

G'day,
no idea, but that wont stop me offering an opinion.
If it an ordinary clockwork mechanism, it can be fixed.
You could substitute the old workings with new [digital] and retain the original face.
You could even have a new face printed; screen, digital, [ooo that word again],or even buy, the choice is out there.

This is the best available information on repairing DS Jaeger clocks.

(belonging to Ben Mack, maintained by Tony Jackson, based on an international effort begun by our own Double Chevron and contributed to by several of us) is the best source of published DS information around. It is now being ported to an easier-to-remember address.

Thanks guys

I used the notes referred to by Roger to repair the clock in my D a couple of years ago. I had no clock (or whale) oil but a couple of carefully applied drops of INOX with Lanolin has done the trick. Also making sure your clock actually has an active power supply from the car also helps. Just because the wire is there means nought.

The clock is now correct (near enough) every minute of the day, not just twice a day as it was for many years.

Sorry, Roger, UFO,

My computer is having a few problems at the moment, so I am unable to check the references suplied.

Proper lubricant IS essential. Clock oil is available at any outlet that services these devices, albeit expensive.

As an alternative LHM would probably do the job better than pressure-pack whatever. My guess only, but NOT recommended!!!

The main issue is to ensure the mechanism is TOTALLY clean, that the lubricant is applied individually to each bearing point and that the amount of lubricant will not be in excess of what is needed. Needle point application of oil IS esential.

Excess and unsuited lubricant in any clock movement will spread out from its point of application and attract dust. The failure of the mechanism will thus be accelerated.

Regards,

Fento

While I appreciate your comments re the INOX, I did not spray it in, I placed drops using a toothpick.

What a brilliant article!

Perth old instrument specialist

I found George Tandy's shop by complete fluke on Cambridge street Wembley, he has been doing car instrument repairs for 40 years and says he has done heaps of Jaeger over the years, so I just dropped a couple of DS clocks in there for repair last week. Will post outcome & costs, he certainly seems to know his way around all this stuff..

Please do, especially if there s a breakdown of the workk performed and the itemised cost, if that isn't too personal.

Instrument repair and calibration is one of those dying arts, unfortunately.

A thousand thanks for that little gem of information. That is ten minutes from home for me in Wembley Downs! And I need him too!

G'day,

clock oil generally stays where you put it, minimum creep, unless you get carried away.

cheers,
Bob

No worries, it is just 100m east of the Wembey Hotel in a little house behind the 2nd hand furniture seller and old mechanics workshop.

Closer to 5 minutes then. Fancy that I didn't know after 21 years in Wembley Downs. I suspect Geoffrey (Chevron Downunder) sent my CX clock there 5 years back. I'd wondered where he had it fixed and remembered too late to ask.

Thanks again. Wonderful information.

I managed to buy a NOS clock on ebay.
Hotrodelectric looked at it and declared it from a Peugeot.
Works great, and the price was right.

My friend Steve has a Veglia clock in the DS21+. He paid less than 40 US dollars for it on ebay.

You can iimprove on the twice a day accuracy without any cost. When you get in the car set it for fifteen minutes ahead of your watch. Then it is correct at least once while you are driving which can be a better average.

All good, but don't forget old NOS clocks may still need a service, particularly to get them lubricated properly.

I called in today with an old 8-day Jaeger car clock (mechanical) and my grandfather's barometer. Lovely place, instruments of many types, including fuel guage sender units, and one friendly and experienced instrument man. I'm now thinking about what else I need fixing.......

Can't believe this place has been under my nose!

Thanks again for the information. Do you live close by?

Cheers
