Is there someone reading this that can tell me if it is an easy task to change the filter in a 2002 607 AL4 transmission. I do not want to remove and strip the gearbox to do this job. Also has anyone replaced the water cooled transmission cooler with an air cooled one

607 have 4hp20 or am6 not al4

If it's a 4HP20 (same as my late-model XM), then AFAIK no it's not easy.

Things I have learnt about the 4HP20:
1. Change the fluid (they are not "filled for life")
2. Use the right oil/fluid
3. Don't overfill (the manual says this causes them to overheat)

I will follow your quest for a separate cooling system with interest. Simplest way might be to use existing heat exchanger, but with coolant running through new pipes to a separate radiator. This would of course also require an electric pump, thermostat, and some way of bleeding out air.

Apparently part of the job of the current system is actually bringing the auto fluid up to operating temperature more quickly. Not sure how important that is in Australia...

Cheers
Alec
