Hi guys,

am (slowly) getting through the addition of the 1647cc motor and 5spd box in my 17. What I need to know is this, it seems as though the fuego g/box (NG1) is slightly wider than the 17.

Is there another renault that we can borrow halfshafts from without having to have them cut and rewelded? The fuego ones are a no-go, worst come to worst we'll have to cut the 17 ones and reweld them. Any thoughts- perferably cheap ones- what about R12 ones, I heard a rumour they are shorter?

Cheers Ben

Hey,

The driveshafts are now in place, and we altered the camber both for handling and also to stop the driveshafts from binding when on full drop, however we have now run out of rack adjustment.

I wound the rack right in, to try and get the toe out somewhere close to where it should be(it was so way off (toeing in) it wasn't funny).

So now it looks like we may have to turn the rack ends down in a lathe to allow us enough adjustment for a good wheel alignment. Any thoughts on this?

Ben, are the tie rods the same as on a 12? If so, how about welding a plate over the bolt holes (through the tie rod at the rack end), and re drilling it, effectively shortening it? One step further would be to remove the strengthening plate first with a cold chisel.

Hope I've understood your problem...

Cheers,

Stuey

Ben, another trick was to move the lower balljoints out about 1cm by redrilling the lower wishbones, this will give you a bit of negative camber and widen your track slightly, I know in Europe you could buy special lower wishbones about 2 1/2 cm longer than standard, might help with your problems.
David.

Hi guys,

yeah David I have moved the lower balljoint outwards, we welded a plate onto it after cutting off the original. This however moves the tie rod in towards the rack- which is part of the reason we are running out of adjustment. My friend has ready access to a lathe tho'- to me this seems like the easiest option.....

Not quite sure what you mean Stuey- but I am pretty sure the reno 12 and 17 underpinnings are all fairly similar. Either way the rack has to be shortened, and this way no one will know anything has been altered (unless the open up the steering rack)
I'll keep you posted...
Ben
