504 speedo cable

Get a new one made, keep the end bits for reuse.
as good as any

Make sure the cable is routed between rear of speedo and gearbox in smooth and as large as possible curves. I would 1st undo the cable at the back of the speedo and get some lubricant OIL into it. I mostly used drips of oil off the end of my dip stick! say 10 drips/drops!
Please note: I have done this now for over 50 years and never had to replace the original cable. The oil will travel downwards when you drive the car. Good Luck.

It could be as simple as, the nut which secures the cable into the back of the speedo head has come loose loose. A little nip up cured the 404's clicking.
