Hey all,

without meaning to start a big debate on what oils to use in these gearboxes, I'm about to do a gearbox oil change and wondering how suitable Shell Rimula X 15W40 would be for the BA10/5 in my 504?

It's a diesel engine oil, I don't see any problems, would it be ok/good even? I know some guys on the 505 turbo forums swear by Redline, while us aussiefrogs guys seem to veer the way of caution and use the specified engine oil. Wanting to stay away from synthetic oils, however, to prevent seal shrinkage and the resulting oil leaks.

So Rimula X ok?

Ok....what about just a cheap 15w40 diesel engine oil I have laying around? (Helix Diesel HX5)

Surely it would only take a hour to change the oil if the synchros don't like it. :)

I seem to recall that a multi grade oil is necessary.

Have run 15W40 diesel in 504 ute for last 100,000kms without apparent problems. Was advised to avoid "frothing" oils at the time I changed.....!!??

Put in the Shell Helix Diesel oil and a dose of Nulon G70. Seems to like it very much :)
