Please advise any tricks or known procedures for changing auto transmission
fluid for a 504
Vehicle is being accessed via a pit

On a 504 it's pretty easy
Disconnect the two cooling lines that go to the radiator and start the car
One in a drum to suck new oil in and the other to dump the old oil out
Once you see clean fresh oil come out the change is done
It will take around 15-20L of fresh oil to do it
THe other way is to dump the oil out and refill the amount taken out, run the car then repeat the process
Will still take around the same amount of oil

If it's the usual Australian fitted Borg Warner 35, I'd just take the pan off, and that'll get about 5L removed. If that stuff looks reasonable, that's all you need do. While you have the pan off, it'd be worth adjusting the front band.

The answer on this page sounds about right (and saves me typing):

Also important that the kick-down cable be connected properly. If it's slack, hydraulic pressures will be low and clutches may slip.

If the fluid that comes out is badly burnt, best drain-run-refill a few times to wash it out of the converter and pump. If there's debris in it close your eyes and hope it goes away (more seriously, parts were cheap for these, and some old-school auto-trans specialists probably have everything needed in a dusty drawer, but prices probably won't be as cheap as they used to be).

OTOH, if it's a ZF transmission, that probably deserves a bit more care. I've never worked on one.

ZF3HP12/20 was in a few of the early 504's in Australia (like my 72) I am sure a fluid change is a similar process in both boxes. Just drop the pan. Get hold of a new pan gasket and a filter. The filter will hold a bit of oil so watch out when this is removed.
