Have written about the economy of that engine in many other threads. It was a manual 1998 D8 SV, and driven for economy. It was bog standard. If I'd wanted a more powerful car, I'd have got a more powerful car to begin with.
Regularly got mid-7, in traffic 8s, with box trailer in the 9s, and on the open road saw under 7 a few times. All were manual calculations from litres at the pump and distances on the odo.
A bit like driving a diesel, I let the torque (267 @ 4000) do the work, but didn't rev it, and changed up early.
