Does anyone know of a 4CV website (In English). Have a Mini in the family amongst the Renault brigade, but know of a fairly good 4CV going 4 sale soon which is more in keeping with "the heart" than the Mini! rather cute this wee rear engine "French Mini's", but want some data and have a read-up first.
Thanks = Paul

What data do you want?

http://www.chez.com/hercelin/4cv2/ is an excellent French one. Yes, French, but numbers are the same. There's the 4cv register website.. but its old address doesnt work anymore?...

G'day

As the Editor for the Renault 4CV Register of Australia, I'm sorry to report that our website is currently unavailable due to a takeover of our former host ISP. The fee schedule set by the new owners of the ISP would involve a prohibitive amount monthly and, as our former account ran out at about the same time as the takeover, they simply pulled the plug on our page. When we get back online, we shall announce it here.

For the present, the best 4CV website in English is the UK Renault 4CV Register. You'll find their site at http://www.4cvuk.co.uk . If you don't mind a little French (it's easy to navigate and there is some English) go to http://www.chez.com/delaunoy/ for the largest set of 4CV links on the net and some very good technical information.

Cheers

George

Paul,

As a long time owner of a 4CV I can only suggest you snap this one up!!! They are charming little cars. Basically, pretty well everything you need to keep one going, or even restore it, is available one way or another, with reliable purchases possible ex-France and we have an excellent register group in Australia.

There are two fundamental things I'd suggest:

1. Avoid pre-1954 cars if there is a choice, as the Renault-made lever action shock absorbers are not available and not common! They are good, well-made with good materials, but the later cars have telescopics.

2. As ever, the body condition is what matters.

Good luck with your deliberations. The UK website that George suggested is excellent.

Let us know what happens please - all 4CVs are dear to us!

Thanks for all this help. I have asked to have first dibs on the car - it has been in one family for yonks, (but not for all it's life I think) and they are gently persuading Mother into a smaller house and more modern car far better than the 4 cv, something like a Honda Jazz or Mitsubishi Colt. I don't think she's 100% convinced as yet. Given your collective comments, I'll keep my interest to the fore!

I think I'd rather the 4CV over those options too, can't blame the poor lady!

I'm realising I should have paid a lot more attention to this earlier. Don't know what year. I know it has the spider wheels and not the solid slotted variety. I don't even know when those were introduced.

Ah. Spider wheels were the original ones from 1948 to about 1958. Now check whether it has a fine, 6 bar grill or a 3-bar grill. The 3 bar grill should come with telescopic shock absorbers. Not that the lever action ones are a complete "avoid at all costs" but the later cars are a bit better. I have a spider wheel car with lever dampers.
