My 308 Allure 2012 was last serviced April 2022 by Melbourne City Peugeot.

On Thursday night the oil warning light came on and I stopped at Super Cheap for some oil. I grabbed what I thought was the right oil for the car, but the guy at the counter looked it up and asked me to change it. I then filled up the oil, it was basically empty.

The car drove about 60km on Friday, then when driving out of the driveway the engine fault error light came on.

The oil I used was the Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 Part Synthetic.

I will call to get this resolved on Monday morning, but any advice about the above would be appreciated. I assume I used the wrong oil?

What engine does it have? I don't like the sound of basically empty.

Turbo EP6 with 5F? in the VIN? It should be using 5W30 full synthetic oil, not 10W40 of any sort.
To lose that much oil in a short period means you either you have a significant oil leak or it is going out the exhaust, which should show up as blue smoke, oily exhaust pipe and/or some performance issue. Is it leaking on the ground under it.

Yes, turbo with 5F in the VIN. Thanks for clarifying the oil type.

An oil leak was reported in the last service report but was advised it was minor. I didn't notice anything much leaking onto the ground, if there was it was minor.

This engine should not be using much oil between changes ever 10k.
I just fixed daughters 308 oil leak from vacuum pump on end on cam. Now its leaking again but I think from the drips on the down pipe/cat its from the oil filter/ cooler. Only minor and i have the gasket o rings already.
Check the dip stick correctly after filling and check after a decent drive. Should always have oil, if not either parked on a angle , engine facing up the hill or burning the oil. Remove the engine cover from under the car maybe the oil is collecting on the cover?

My EP6 uses about 750ml every 10K k's. Just enough to run it from max to almost min on the dipstick.

It wouldn't be unheard of, of a dealer not refilling it correctly. As long as you didn't drastically overfill the oil it won't have caused the engine light to come on - assuming you didn't put in more than about 1 litre. Always check the oil on level ground after being parked for a few mins.

Make sure you use a 5W30 fully synthetic C2 or C3 rated oil.

Cheers

Justin

Hi Justin, that's a great answer. You made me realise that I did overfill the oil. What kind of damage/repair would occur as a result? I'll call a service centre this morning. Thanks!

The oil you want to get from Supercheap is Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP. Although I noticed that my Pug specialist mechanic used Total 9000 - 5W-40. I don't know why, but perhaps this grade is better for reducing oil consumption between services.

He's using that because he can't / won't stock the correct oil.

These engines best go with 5w40 BMW LL01 full SAPS oil.
PSA's shitty low SAPS spec makes them consume oil.
Oil consumption leads to residues & carbon deposits as well as offering less protection for engine parts.

We've been using that for the last 10 years.
I can tell you that the results have been consistently catastrophic.
Countless engine rebuilds & a shitty reputation & hatred for that engine with all its versions.

Which one? The Mobil or Total?

It is a very well regarded Peugeot specialist who listed the Total 5W-40 on the invoice. I have a bottle of the Mobil and was planning to do a DIY oil change at 6 months.

Mobil 1 ESP
Or any oil from any company with the equivalent low SAPS spec.

Some overseas countries won't have access to the oil brands we have here in Australia such as Penrite and Nulon, so bear in mind that these are also available in Australia.

Cheers

Regardless of brands
This is what matters ;)

I quoted BMW because it's their engine & because I've been following their advice for their engine along with countless others & we never heard about oil consumption like those who use low SAPS oils recommended by Peugeot.

Yep why don't you quote peugeot recommendations for whale bladder oil in diffs about as relevant as a 05 BMW tech bulletin

The service centre reported that pre-existing problems identified in the last service were the cause of this situation, not the oil. Sorry, I can't be more specific due to my lack of knowledge in this area! The car will need more time in the service centre for repairs. Due to the extended repair period the service centre manager has provided us with a Citroen C3. This is an awesome vehicle, a very impressive small car ($34K driveway).

While we had both vehicles with engine faults our minds were fixated on what brand to replace our Peugeot addiction with. The steps taken to resolve the problems have gone a long way to restoring confidence in the brand and the service centre.
