hello, I apologize if this has already been addressed here. I bought the first French Peugeot 306, year of manufacture 1996. After a month, the crankshaft made a hole in the engine block. It is a 1.8 8V 74 kW with automatic transmission. I found a car with a broken manual transmission at a junkyard. Question. Is the manual transmission interchangeable with the automatic on this engine? Or can I replace the engine with a 16 valve variant and keep my automatic transmission? Thank you very much for the answers.

Yes manual gearbox interchangeable with auto and yes you can swap your 8V for the 16V, it all fits, wiring etc is your responsibility. Get ECU and loom for 16V. The big issue which should work is wiring back into car, others may know more but given manufacturing all sensors should be the same and work with your instruments. Lots of things to think of and I am sure this is not the full answers to any issues discovered.

that would work

but it would be even easier to get a complete engine/transmission and drop out the old and in with the new

good luck with it
