Looking on youtube it seems the only way into the 306 central control center ( Fan control section ) is to remove the steering wheel, speedo display binacle and release the center console unit from the back. Or is there an easier way? My controls have lost their illumination at night. Need to replace bulbs with LEDs.

Not at all, take central fascia lower section off (lift out bottom), undo screws and with cate do what you need to.

tried that but could not get into the upper section with the fan controls....

And requires judicious twisting and encouragement, watch the wire attachments to the controls and if they come out

Just dont forget the 2 8mm nuts inside the radio hole. Basically one each side of the radio inside the hole. Obviously radio out. You can get the heater control panel out in about 5 minutes

Ah, now the secret stuff is surfacing... thanx, will try again.

Fair enough forgot that part, they are behind and around the metal holding the stereo in too, real fingers inly stuff, a 1/4 inch ratchet with 8mm will assist. Be gentle crappy brittle plastics.
