My 98 Phase 2 306 Cabrio has completely lost its digital odometer readout, happened suddenly. Car has done 180,000 km approx.
What are the most likely causes and remedies. Is the speedometer removeable from the cluster individually or does one need to replace the whole instrument cluster if the odometer is non repairable.

Any help offered would be much appreciated P1090785.jpgP1090785.jpg

Normally these just blow the globe behind the lcd on the odo easily replace t10 from memory pointing up

If its stopped suddenly then check the gearbox sensor, $20 fix. Mind you if the tacho is working and the odometer is not or vice versa then this indicates this sender is working and you are lookign at a dry joint in the instrument cluster.

Good luck, ask away

What does the tacho have to do with the odo ?

They are electrically connected in the cluster, or am I mistaken?

My diesel 306 sedan has a bad sender, the tacho drops but the odometer does not. So as you say its backlight or dry joints in the led display.?

Can't be, if the sender is not working then neither works, if one is working and the other not, then its cluster related?

The tacho comes from the engine speed sensor the speedo and the odo comes from the diff sensor/gearbox output or wheel speed sensor in later cars

Silly me, of course they do, the speed sensor will kill the odometer or dry joints the display then.

Thanks everyone for that feedback, I guess I need to access the rear of the cluster to check the bulb behind the lcd & replace that. Dp Pug dealers supply a bulb or can it be bought from an electronic component store?

Get onto ebay and get your self leds to suite, the only downside is dimming? Many places sell bulbs.

Jaycar repco the original ones lasted 20 years they will be fine

The odometer display is LED no backlight they are active light emitters. If they die suddenly its going to be electronic failure, this might be repairable but globes will not be the answer.

Are you sure there cowboy

I hope so, clear head after a day at work and having read this carefully enough and having driven my 2002 it is led digits. Prepared to be challenged, far too often it seems!

I think you'll find it's a backlit LCD.....

Backlit LCD OK, buy the bulbs and fix it then makes life simpler.
