2CV Chassis Replacement

What problems did you experience with the Tie-Coat? Did it load up the paper, or was it hard to sand? What was the surface "feel" after sanding - waxy or just smooth?

Cheers, Adam.

OK I'm missing a whole page here in the thread that was salvaged, so I will have to let the pictures do the talking...
If anyone can help with the missing text let me know.

Dave sprayed the sunny sides of all other yellow panels early this morning & they are still in the booth now to be picked up first thing in the morning.
Of course they look sensational.
Some motion video of Dave spraying below....

Meanwhile back at the ranch, Chris sprayed undercoat on our last remaining maroon panels. Last night we did etching & sanding 'til 10 or so :)
Not sure how we are looking for tomorrow night for the maroon top coat, however Tuesday may be feasible.

The body was raise to gain better access to the underside for the black textured Wurth deadening spray, masking off all other areas prior.
It came up a treat so now the whole under side has it as covering & most has Por15 as the etch for rust proofing anyway.

There was a wait for the black stuff to dry, we the loaded the duck body onto my ute for it's run back home to meet it's new chassis.
Chris, Donella & I dropped it onto the chassis this afternoon & tonight I bolted it down.
The master cylinder, clutch cable, rear seat belts, pedals steering column & a few fiddly bits are done.

Most of the bolts are with a zinc coating place until Wednesday, which may hold me up a little. There are things I can do without bolts so it's not a total loss.

Spent a few hours on the assembly tonight & an hour or so with Chris sanding the guards & boot lid this arvo. Chris has both rear guards nearing completion now. They are all being painted Friday arvo/ Saturday morning.

Hopefully the bolts are ready to pick up from the electoplater tomorrow because I am starting to struggle, in need of more bolts very soon.

Bit of wiring tonight.

Today I completely finished bolting down the body to the chassis, the very rear bolt holes didn't line up & needed a little persuasion.
Electroplated bolts weren't ready today so I paid a visit to Euroserve to pick some new ones up to get me out of trouble.
Electroplated bolts will be ready in the morning.

Chris has been working almost solo on the guards, in record time too.
Last weekend they were all a mess, now they are very close to ready.
Friday arvo the back side of the boot lid will be painted, Saturday, all the guards front side painted.

Some pictures are from last night but they are in order of progress.

The boot lid has been sprayed on the rear side & all guards are booked in tomorrow morning 7:30am for their go too.

Hopefully bumpers will be grey tomorrow. That only leaves the striping& arc shape on rear door to do when dolly is back on the road to get to the spray painter on it's own steam.

At this stage, a road test is most definitely looking good for Monday

...a wee update 10-06-06 and 11-06-06

11th Jun 2006, 07:51 PM

By GreenBlood:
Just a little update, so much happened in the last week it's hard to keep track of what happened when...

We did our final preparation on the 'Plum' panels during the week, two rear guards, two front guards and boot lid. The inside of the boot lid was painted on Friday afternoon, and the outsides of all panels painted on Saturday morning. To say they look sensational is an understatement, Dave the painter has done a fantastic job - three coats and a mirror gloss.

Gerry has been very busy assembling the parts previously prepared, a huge undertaking virtually rebuilding the car from scratch - I'll leave him to fill in the details and post pics of the progress. You may wait awhile he has been doing daylight to mid-night most of this week.

Today I painted the front and rear bumpers, light bar, overiders and a few bits and pieces in there original grey. Then masked and sprayed the black sound deadening goop onto the inside of the 'plum' panels Dave had painted yesterday. All looking very smick :wink2:

Finally for me today, spent a short while with Gerry and helped fit one rear guard.

Cheers
Chris

The guards look fantastic & it's hard to photograph them properly with the limited lighting.

Working on the carpets until midnight last night so I had a clean run at nitty gritty reassembly first thing this morning & to be ready for the plum panels.

The carpets worked out good. I used the original two piece rubber mats as a template, made some improvements on the design, then cut a new one piece carpet. The one piece design does mean the front seats need to be removed to take the carpet out (easy), but I felt having 2 pieces of carpet would be troublesome & not sit correctly, being lighter in weight than the rubber.

The pictures tell more than I could but basically, I've just finished for the day now, the wiring is tested & all OK, I just need to add fuel to the tank & it should fire up.

Tomorrow the little bastard© will be road tested over a bituminous substrate (ie a road).

Only apprehensions now are the rubbers around the doors & fitting the bonnet.

Rubbers: I had a quick go at sliding & pushing the rubbers into the grooves around the doors but it looked like a very time consuming task so I put it off.
I will try some molybdenum grease tomorrow.

Bonnet: When we trial fitted the bonnet at bogging stage we had a tough time getting it to go on. In the process it suffered the condition "bog flex©". the metal flexed but the bog flaked. That would be disastrous now.

Gerry,

Unless the door rubbers you speak of are chemical resistant, consider a castor-oil based rubber grease. PBR sell a runny one in tubes, also Castrol sell "GRR" (much waxier) in 500g pots. Neither will hurt the paint, and both are good for the rubber.

Your painter is a keeper (way better than many I've seen), but the finish also shows how good the final prep was!

Regards, Adam.

Thanks for that Adam.

Yep prep was good & really I have Chris to thank for that. Up until a few months ago I wouldn't have had a clue on body work processes.

Here's another vid of Dave spraying some plum around:

Looks good gibgib.

Hey Tinsnail1 - is this the extent you want to go to with your red car?
Can't wait to see the new Acadiane van that you just bought in France - better post some pics in the Cit forum.

You should have bought a 504 coupe though - much prettier!

No you can't strip your red 2CV at my house over summer. Ned has a spare garage though...

Didn't get to test drive it, but it's all good anyway.

I had other obligations this morning but when Chris arrived with the newly painted bumpers we decided to stick some fuel in it & fire it up. It started first go & sounded it's usual self except for a few exhaust leaks (which are now fixed).

Chris & I fitted the bonnet, left side guard & little yellow panel. Fitment gaps are excellent & was equally good on the right side when I did the fitment solo later.

Bled the brakes, final adjustment on clutch cable which hopefully allows for some stretching as it's a newy. Front & rear bumpers look good & are fully fitted. Repeaters on rear sides of front guards need an earth (new type) so that will be a pending job soon. The front ones are going.

The drivers door is attached after fighting with the door rubber first. They just suck up time, the actual job isn't too bad.

Won't say what will happen tomorrow, I'll just report what happened after it happened :)

There are over 700 images now in this thread.

What an absolutely brilliant result; you guys make Lazarus look like he suffered from ADHD by comparison.
It's obviously a labour of love not one motivated by profit or even at ten bucks an hour you would have paid for a Contach.

It would have to be pretty close to the best in the country I would expect now.
I suppose you'll be taking the Berlingo to the FCD then Gerry?:roflmao: :roflmao:

That's looking incredible Gerry. You must be really happy with the way it's turned out. Did you have fun sliding the bonnet and rear doors in (watching all your shiny paint getting scrapped off  ).

How about I send one of my cars up there for you guys to practice on before you tackle a traction :D

Shane,

I am disappointed; I thought you were going to tell them how good it would be with a "real" suspension.:joker: :joker: :roflmao: :roflmao:
