2CV Chassis Replacement

29th Jun 2006, 10:52 PM

Undid the accelerator rod on Monday night & cleaned the gummmy stuff off it with a scourer. It came up a lot better but I also put some grease into the bore & on the rod where the carby meets.
I think it will need replacing/ reconditioning at some stage but it is working reliably now.

Since Tuesday the 2cv has done 450miles & will cover the same distance again by Saturday evening.
Still some adjusting & little things to do but all is sweet.

Buffing & nib removal Saturday morning. This is to smooth the painted surface to one level by removing a skim of paint with the cutting compound.
Afterwards,
Chris & I fitted the chrome sill dressing to both sides.

To remove the cutting compound I needed to give the whole car a polish. It will get a wash next Saturday as there's still pieces of paint sitting in places from buffing. The polishing was a bit of a rushed job so I might do it again after the wash.

Today: Rechecked suspension heights (OK), turned spring pots to get rid of noise over bumps (which worked), fitted rear door jam rubbers, fixed another small exhaust leak.
Rear badges are now on too.

How do you stop the surface rusting while it waits for painting? Anything I've ever stripped to bare metal has started rusting almost straight away. (and the steel you have looks like it had the rust alloyed into it when it was made)

Jarrod

You are right Jarrod, some time ago I came to the conclusion that most french cars came from the factory with rust as mums DS21, which wasn't that old, started to show signs of cancer weeks after she bought it. At that time some newer cits were also rusting. My '75 R16TS started to rust, it was only 2 years old when I bought it, I had it for 4 months before the rust showed.

Hi Gerry,

you'll find the cutters leave a swirly finish behind. I highly recommend getting some 3M micro cutters to finish off with..... Most importantly after this get some 3M hand glaze. This isn't a polish, however it removes all the cutters and leaves a finish that would leave mirror looking pretty unreflective in comparinson :D

The 3M stuff isn't cheap, especially if purchased in the bigger bottles (I get it from the really good local autopaint specialists). However 1bottle will last years ... Infact if your a person like me that never washes a car let alone polishes it, it'll last you a lifetime :roflmao: I've still got my original bottle of both, they have given been used on the 2cv, CX turbo, CX2400, CX wagon, GS1220 and every other car I've painted over the last decade. The finish is simply outstanding (I don't really do brand names. I tried some Macquiers once as everyone raves about it. I got there leather conditioner... I reckon it's the worst sh!t I've ever bought, infact it's so poor I'd sooner chuck it in the bin than apply it to the seats again).

Unofficially the last post I will make about the restoration process of the Duck.

I may "pluck" up the courage to do a breakdown of costing but I'd guess it owes about $14 - 15k, obviously without labour cost included (excluding welding & top coat spray painting). Time perhaps 300 hours, mostly two people on the job.

It's easy to see how a restoration in the hands of a professional could go many times higher than a DIY job. It would be very easy to over capitalise yourself, even on a 2CV.

The 2CV Dolly duck took out 1st place at the French Car Day last Sunday.
It goes to show that if you have the enthusiasm, some basic skills& an eye for detail, anybody can achieved a result like this.
Awards aside, I know I have a really top 2CV that looks great, goes great, plus I know a lot more about it now too.

No, no, the body work & decals (+ other stuff) would not have been possible without Chris. To be honest, I knew bugger-all about body work (as you would have read earlier in this thread). Chris had undertaken some 20 years or so ago so had a pretty good idea about how things went. I wonder if he knew how long it would eventually take to complete?

Together we learnt about different paint systems, sanding, bogging & spraying.

We ended up with some good gear for doing this type of work. The next job we undertake will be not daunting at all & we actually look forward to it.

Big thanks to Chris (GreenBlood)

Welding. Peter Fosselius from Perth did a fantastic job welding in all the new panels & sometimes manufacturing some of them onsite. Everything fitted nicely on reassembly so there's no doubt he knows what he's doing.

Fully recommend him on any duck rust repairs & he also fixed all the front end noises, especially eliminating from the kingpins & wheel bearings so he knows his mechanics. He also helped with technical problems over the phone prior to, & after he left my place.

Big thanks to Peter (2CViking)

Received many favourable comments about the quality of the spray paint job. Also people wanting to know who did it.
David M

Paint used was 2 Pack Standox brand. See page 8 for paint codes - Plum & Custard.

Shane made the painting all seem possible with his "quick paint job" thread & both he & Alan S gave some good pointers in the early days in our mods forum.

I was also asked about the interior at the FCD. This was done prior to the restoration but it was purchased off ebay, they have a listing here , website Harrington Group. Choose your own colour combination, fit it all yourself fairly easily.

Thanks Gerry, this project should have been sponsored by McDonalds :roflmao: :roflmao:

Must say, there really is a gap in my life - without Dolly  , I enjoyed every frustrating minute. Working with you was a pleasure, you were not prepared to do anything by half (my style), and your perseverance has paid off. Only you and possibly your lovely wife could know the hours and sometimes agony that you put in, we can see by the progress reports here that you were on a mission... :approve:

I would like to add to your list above and give a special thanks to Addo, when things looked like they were going sour Adam stepped in with some excellent knowledge based advise. I'll tell you now 'cause we've had success with this one, there were moments when I felt out of my depth - confidence grew with feed back from forum members Addo, Shane, Alan, and a number of others... what great place this is. :) :afplak:

When your ready we'll get stuck into something challenging - how about a right hand drive conversion and restoration of an SM :whip:

Congrats on the award, and yes 'the' reward is one the best damn 2CV6 (insert Yorkshire accent here - in joke) in Aus. Well done

Cheers
Chris

To the Duck Doctors
This is my first post on AF; I have been waiting for a long time to write this. Looking and following your Dolly Duck adventure everyday on AF. I don’t think any word can describe it, but a HUGE congratulation to you and your Dolly Duck crew with an absolutely fantastic result.
Without any doubt Dolly Duck is the best 2CV in the country, don’t forget to “show and tell” your insurance company. My estimation is $ 25.000 and happy to put it on paper.
Enjoy driving her, but DON”T speed.

Happy Ducking

Hey Tinsnail1 - is this the extent you want to go to with your red car?
Can't wait to see the new Acadiane van that you just bought in France - better post some pics in the Cit forum.

You should have bought a 504 coupe though - much prettier!

No you can't strip your red 2CV at my house over summer. Ned has a spare garage though...

ipb205.

Here it is IPB205! It now has matt black racing rims...and a pommy plate A64 EBL

One year since the restoration already.
It has been in daily use since then, mainly as a first car during the week for my wife & a skate/ beach machine on the weekends for me. It's perfect for the coast.

I found these pictures in my old phone of the day I first picked it up

Gee, you've got those pictures too. I've got a few over the shoulder pics of when I was bringing Junior home too.

Ahhh, the memories :D
