currently I have problem with my manual gearbox. My mechanic said it's probably the diff, but no one dare to open it and change one by one. So, i have to get the whole gearbox changed, with secondhand one (AUD$1850 6month warranty) :( I haven't consult with the dealer yet (i'll do it next year)

I'm just wondering, if i change it with GTI gearbox, will it improve signnificantly? what id the side effect with my 1.6L engine? How about fuel consumption? and how should i drive it? should i change gear at higher rev? gti will be more expensive, of course.(no idea how much it cost though)

the ratio of both gearboxz as follow:
GTI XT
Ratio 1 : 3.455 3.417
Ratio 2 : 1.870 1.950
Ratio 3 : 1.360 1.276
Ratio 4 : 1.051 1.054
Ratio 5 : 0.861 0.854
Reverse : 3.333 3.584
Final Drive : 3.79 3.76

Anyone with knowledge about the ratio, PLEASE help me :) tha

Bear in mind, the 1.6 & 2.0 cars use different series of gearboxes. The 1.6 has the MA/5 gearbox, whereas the 2.0 has the BE4/5 (not sure which letter the 206GTi has, the 307 2.0 16V has the BE4/5S).Not sure how different these gearboxes are though.

according to my CD's i have the EW10J4 has the BE4R box in it
TU1JP
TU3JP
TU5JP
have the MA box in them

DW10TD diesel turbo has the same BE4R box as the GTi

hope that helps

If your mechanic is too chicken to open up a manual gearbox, can I suggest you find a new mechanic (preferably one that is not scared of pugs)?
