From what I've read about 205s, the GTI models have a unique lower A-arm in the front suspension (nice and stiff), whereas other 205s have a floppy Ford Escort type of set-up (a simple lower arm, which is triangulated by the swaybar).

I'm wondering whether the 205 Si, being such a late model has the GTI lower arms, or the "Escort" type.

Does anyone know?

The SI has the "floppy" set up.
Not really a problem, they still handle very well and don't crash over every bump as the GTI does.

Yeah, I think the SI is a a very under-rated car. They seem quite a good package, and 65kW and 132Nm is pretty good in a 870kg car, although the performance figures I've seen aren't quite as good as I would expect from those engine specs. Maybe the SI is higher geared than the early Aus spec GTI? When you do the maths, given the same gear ratios, the SI should be capable of keeping up with the early Aus spec GTI, due to its lighter weight.

And the 1580cc engine is supposedly a real gem (short stroke, big valves, etc), while the SI badge should attract cheaper insurance premiums.

The s1 GTI's figures might look ordinary on paper but combined with their relatively low gearing and low end torque they're a punchy little bugger......they feel punchier than an s2 down low too.

The SIs i've driven are good things, unfussed handlers, engine wise they row along nicely

Don't the GTIs use a slightly modified 405 strut/arm setup?.....

What did the overseas 1.6 GTIs use front suspension wise?

The 1.6 SI engine isn't the destroked 1.9, that was used in BX16s?, 1.6 GTIs? was it?.....it's another 1.6 altogether?....can't remember if it was or not...

I wasn't saying the early GTI was mediocre, just that the SI should be able to keep up given the same gearing (just punch the power and torque to weight figures into a calculator, taking into consideration the weight of the driver, say 70kg or so).

The SI has the same motor as the 1.6GTI, but the SI has a milder cam, and a carby type manifold with single point injection.

The 1.6GTI has the same front suspension arms as the 1.9, but the cabrios have the "Escort" type of set-up.
