205 Mi16 - new alternator not providing current

Hi all,

The Mitsubishi alternator in my Mi16-engined 205 has given up - it was dumping 19V into the battery at idle, and roasted it. From what I've read, this seems to be a common occurrence, so I elected to replace the alternator itself instead of rebuilding.

I recently ordered a new Valeo 90A unit and fitted it - but it won't provide any output at all. Voltage measured at the battery remains at 12.5V when running. The one time it did provide power, a clamp meter I had handy only measured 1A.

I've fitted new terminals and leads, and bypassed the starter altogether to see if it'd help (made up two leads to hook it directly to the battery), to no avail.

The main difference between this Valeo unit (P/N 433161) and the old Mitsubishi one is this one doesn't have an exciter lead on it, for what it's worth.

Have I butchered something horribly along the way, not connected something vital, or got myself a dud? This Valeo unit seems to put out voltage when spun up by hand, so shouldn't be a total dud.

Can you post pics of both the alternator backs

If there's no external excitement, it won't start charging until the revs get higher. Google self excitement alternator rpm.

The back of the Mitsubishi unit and the Valeo unit, respectively.

I read about alternator excitement - I gave it a few squirts to about 3500rpm, didn't seem to start it at all. Talked to a mechanic today (unrelated, for a pink slip on my other car) but he mentioned that wiring for internally and externally excited alternators are different but can't seem to find anything to describes exactly how.

So what’s connected to this

If nothing you need to put a eye terminal on the old plug for the the 10 odd volts that was there is fine

I've connected it to ground as it was reading to be the ground - does that mean the exciter wire should connect there instead?

Cheers for the assistance!

Yes just double check there is no other plug u may have damaged the reg in there but that’s what warranty is for

Absolute legend, it's cranking out the volts and running like a dream - I owe you one big time!
