I failed trying to find on the web what is the cam profile for the GTI vs the SI grinds and the manuals I have are adamant at saying nothing about it.

Anyone know where to find this info? A reliable source?

There are quite a few GTi camshafts.
ie
105 hp 1.6L
115 hp 1.6L
130 hp 1.9L D6B
122 hp 1.9L DKZ
105 hp 1.9L DFZ

I can't recall all the details but I know this (inlets):

Si - 0.380" lift
DFZ - 0.405" lift, 218 @ 0.050"
DKZ - 0.445" lift, 220 @ 0.050"
D6B - 0.445" lift, 226 @ 0.050"

Hmmm. Isn't the Si the same thing as DKZ?

I thought all 205Si had DKZ engines?

No, Sis are 1.6 with Marelli Monopoint injection.
The DKz is the later 1.9 fitted to S3 205s and late series 1 405s, also Citroen BX TZi and TRi122.
As I said before the Si head and block are the same as DKz, but the crankshaft, pistons, rods and cam are different.
You would need to get a set of DKz pistons and rods and a camshaft to make a DKz from the parts I sent you. Plus the Motronic injection system.

What is different about the crank? The stroke seems to be the same for DFZ and DKZ engines.

Also, the compression is higher in DKZ engines, but I thought that was because of the different head (and perhaps pistons) so not sure if rods would need to be different too? What is difference, anyway?

Yes, same for DFZ and DKZ but different for the Si. The rods need to be shorter on the 1.9s as the piston pin to crown height is the same for 1.6 and 1.9.
Compression higher on the DKZ because of the head/piston combination.
You get even higher compression by using a DKZ/Si head with DFZ/Si pistons (with 1.9 crank of course) but I'd recommend using the DKZ pistons.
These are available new from Caravelle for around $500.
