Hi everyone,

I'm keen to get a shorter gear throw and cut out some of the slack in the gear lever for my 1988 205 Gti.

Have any of you installed a short shift kit such as this before? Did it help improve your gear shifting experience? IMHO the stock set-up is pretty loose. Seems like a relatively simple installation, but will be getting a mechanic to do it.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Yes I have and yes, I think it is worthwhile but, as a first step have you replace the gearshift links? The bushes in the wear out which is usually the cause of most of the slackness and imprecision. Fixing this makes a huge difference.

I agree with Richard. Slack is not caused by the length of the throw. Remember you're talking about a 30 year old mechanism. You can have a very nice and tight shift with long throw. I have replaced all the plastic cup/balljoints with rose joints and that took away all the slack and improved the feel immensely.
