Just thought I would post up my recent findings with a 205 gti that had an infuriating miss. Symptoms were
-hard to start on first crank
-once cranked a few times the next attempt would cough into life
- idled 8/10 but would stutter at the touch of light throttle
- drove ok on modulating throttle but would miss randomly.
- lost power above 3500rpm if WOT
- would sometime miss like it was pinging but no pinging
- would rev to the limiter if you dip the clutch a floor it

After lots of tinkering, testing and generally thinking about it I suspected that because it needed that first crank maybe there was too much or not enough fuel. Either flow or pressure. In a moment of sheer brilliance I squeezed the fuel feed line which goes to the rail and could hear fuel or air squeezing past the reg. So changed out the reg from another working car and presto its got full power!

So if your having similar issues there you go!

The was on a 94 car so plastic fuel rail and inlet. Car now runs better than ever

I am very impressed with your "In a moment of sheer brilliance" epiphany.

If I may so myself. I was lucky the pipe was new and soft to squish!

Another easy check is to verify the fuel coming out of the regulator. It should be 540mL in 15 sec. Whilst it doesn't rule out fuel pressure fluctuations, it will identify if the pump is dead, filter blocked etc.

Looking forward to driving it now it's sorted!
