2004 Peugeot 307 AL4 Automatic Gearbox Issue

Replacement AL4 need to have same markings to match a 2Lt Petrol. Get the torque converter rebuilt approx $400 as you don't want to reinstall a replacement box to find this was faulty.

Rebuild kits can be purchased from AliExpress if you have a skilled mechanic and rebuild instructions are freely available

Post photos (reduce to small) so others can advise on the petrol motor, heater flap etc, share VIN so we know which engine probably a RFN but only guessing

P0104 is an air flow metering intermittent fault. Open or disconnected circuit, or battery voltage short to earth.

When posting engine problems, it's best to quote the engine code (VIN letters 6-7-8). This is because of the large number of subtly different 1.6L and 2.0L engines, both petrol and diesel, used by Peugeot, and it makes a sensible reply more likely from people who know the engine.

Hello everyone,

I went to search the forum for the tricks to resolving AL4 woes - but the posts have gone! What happened?

So, I have recently had a couple of issues where the gearbox has shifted out of 4th (twice in exactly the same spot in exactly the same journey, followed by another event today on a completely different route).

Each time I have simply turned the car off and then on again, then continued on my way with no further issue, but there is an issue I wish to resolve. I gather the first thing to do would be to top up the oil - what's the slippery stuff of choice?

Is it worth changing filters at the same time?

Is it worthwhile attempting to replace solenoids as well?

Thanks,

Ewan
Surely this is the classic valve replacement job? Plenty of AL4 anecdotes about this, but a Peugeot specialist mechanic should readily be able to confirm this diagnosis and replace the valves, with any need to replace the whole transmission. Specialist Peugeot mechanic advice needed, not just an auto trans person who may lead you up the wrong garden path.

I sometimes get that flaring between 1st and 2nd - it seems to come and go. If it gets too bad I select snow mode so the car starts off in 2nd gear.
Penrite full synthetic is the oil to use.

Thanks for the snow mode trick. It worked a treat!
