1968 404 injection

Does the system in the ID use a mechanical points arrangement to fire the injectors? This was used as far back as the disastrous Bendix System used in the 1958 Chryslers. If you keep the distributor and coil ignition you can use Megasquirt 1, very simple and straightforward.
DJetronic ... Everyman as his dog seems to have done the conversion, so it shouldn't be impossible for me :) (famous last works). I'm pretty sure megasquirt could trigger with the ignition..... or even use the Djet points.

I won't say anymore here, I'm hijacking someone elses thread!

Easy to trigger off the ignition. You need to be careful with earthing and shielding with this type of triggering though, high voltages (80 volts back EMF from the coil primary) floating around the loom. Take notice of all the installation advice.

Mechanical injection ..... Actually that's worse I think. Where on earth do you get obselete parts from! If you have injectors and a fuel rail, any modern aftermarket injection system will probably get an old EFI car running :)
The killer is the injectors - made of unobtanium by trolls in the Black Forest, who have now retired.

It is particularly unfortunate that they are the same as those on RSR Porsches and BMW Tii, so one is competing against the cashed-up. Have seen them on eBay for 1200 euro(each)

The old injectors clean up pretty well, although there is a failure rate and not much to be done with a dud one. Wise to grab any you can and get batches cleaned at the diesel injector places. They inject at much lower pressure than modern ones, so it helps if the chap doing the testing knows about them.

Otherwise, there are not many moving parts and it can all be fixed ( at a price ). Some special tools required for assembly/disassembly , so this is not a job for mugs ( me )

It is a remarkably well thought out piece of precision clockwork

It is harder than just getting the parts and starting to tinker, although I suspect that some on this forum would have the skills. Taking it apart and getting it back together again requires special tools , which are not thick on the ground

Koller and Schwemmer bought all the Bosch/Kugelfischer stock and are now the official service agents, so have most of the bits, except injectors. They have all the special tools. They are in Nuremberg. They have one chap who does mechanical petrol injection and he is getting on a bit, but is very helpful.

Being German specialists in precision engineering they are not cheap ( my overhaul cost $4K) and getting pump in and out of the country is a nightmare

Nottingham Diesel in UK are also very good and very helpful and have a moderate range of obsolete parts as well. They seem to be rather cheaper than K+S

Once fixed and going they are largely unkillable units. I am still struggling with getting the tune right after rebuild, but once success achieved I shall leave well alone and expect years of happy service ( which I should, at that price!)

As some on this forum may appreciate, sometimes logic has nothing to do with our decision making processes/drivers :)

Who made the injectors? If there was sufficient demand a smaller firm like Motorpal could be asked to produce a batch to the original design.

I think that they were actually made by Kugelfischer, who then became part of the Bosch group and are now defunct as a separate entity.

The cars I know which used them are injected Porsches from 1970’s , BMW 2002Tii and the injected Ford Capri V6, as well as injected 404’s and 504’s

The injector is the same spec for all, so far as I know

I am OK for the moment, as I had a few in my own right and a mate found me some more, which I had cleaned up, most proving usable. Have vacuum packed them to minimise risk of their going off before I need them.

I am not sure how others deal with this - the prices asked for NOS ones suggest that it is a problem, but there would only be a small and select group opf crazed hairy old men interested, so I suspect that it wouldn’t be a big volume seller.

I hadn’t heard of Motorpal, so wil file this in memory banks in case of need. I have a few spares, os could provide one for ritual sacrifice and copying

Many thanks for the idea
