C and G had moved to Heidelberg by the time they started making the 404. 403s from 1960 were also made in Heidelberg not Moorabbin.

one was missing ...

Heidelberg but the Museum doesn't want to know. So much hand work in the assembly.

in CKD operations were the jigs usually supplied or just the pressings? And the mechanical components - looks like engines-and-gearboxes-and axle assemblies came palletised?

The jigs were part of the set-up for assembly. Peugeot supplied them to their specifications. All the 403 jigs were still in storage at Georgian Engineering in the 1970's. The engines came in wooden crates with plastic tubes blanking the spark plug tubes. They had been test run in France and the oil drained. Everything came in wooden crates no containers with quite a bit of transit damage and corrosion. The precision of the assembly sometimes left something to be desired which was worse with the 404 because the front struts were mounted directly on the body.

You could have bought the entire set of jigs in the 1970's before they went to scrap. Payen took a few 404 pictures but none of the jigs I think.

I'll have another look

Payen may have visited the plant twice when C&G had it. There is a photo of 403 wagons which were discontinued in August 1962.
