The company to be formed by the merger between Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and Groupe PSA – owners of Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and DS – will be called Stellantis, it has been confirmed. The name refers to the Latin word “stello,” meaning “to brighten with stars.”

The agreement will see the two firms enter an equal-ownership partnership, making the combined company the fourth largest car manufacturer in the world.

Stellantis will have an annual production volume of 8.7 million units, which places the firm behind only the Volkswagen Group, Toyota and the Renault-Nissan Alliance. The newly combined company will also become the world’s third largest manufacturer by revenue, with an annual turnover of €170 billion (£144.3 billion
 
Yet another mock Latin formation that would be unrecognisable to a Roman.

Not recognising stello as Latin, I consulted the Oxford Latin Dictionary - yes the BIG one - and found that stello is an obscure back formation from stellatus (adorned with stars), used by Pliny. It doesn't seem to have been used much.

If only they had used stellio - a gecko, or else a deceitful person. Somebody obviously didn't like geckos in those days..

Antis is only the dative case for a pair of pilasters beside a doorway.

I'm afraid Stellantis together sounds dangerously medical and needs therapy. Who pays these people?
 
"Stellar" would make more sense as it is more descriptive and at least means something to many people.

I's suggest that PSA et al may be better reassessing their customer service, sales and service departments in Australia rather than creating high power new names
 
PSA probably couldn't care less about sales and service in Australia once they have sold the cars to private importing companies such as inchcape. All they have to do then is refund the eventual factory warranty claims when and if they eventuate.. That's all they need do.
 
Stella is a not an unknown name in French motoring circles. In Edwardian times there were car firms named Stella in both France and Switzerland. In the 1940's Stela was the well known Vichy maker of electric cars in Lyon.
An equal ownership partnership brings to mind a post Soviet Russian business joke. A hen and a pig enter into a partnership to supply the bacon and egg breakfast trade. When the pig realises his contribution he complains. The hen replies but that's what happens in a joint venture, one partner always dies.
I wonder who is the pig in this venture?

For the first (and only) Car sold perhaps. The Australian car market has plenty of choice (for those without "blinkers" )
