Wanting to know more about the colour code and name for my R17 1312
Mine is the the orange colour.
Any help to obtain the correct colour from my paint shop would be appreciated.

Cheers
John

I take it that the car has been repainted and therefore the paint code on the left inner guard just behind the headlight is no longer visible. I will probably have them some where and will have a look later if Simon doesn't find it first. Autopro parts place and a auto paint place both had the colour code for my R1317 and my R1302. They did a mix, and on both cars the colour was just slightly different to original, so it would have been just noticeable if I was only spraying a part of the car. Given that the original paint was 40 years old at the time that is understandable. Incidentally check that the paint will go over the old paint with out any problems. The R1302 had to be painted with a sealer first as the standard acrylic lacquer caused it to go soft but didn't effect the R1317. Even though according to the code they were supposed to have the same Renault synthetic paint. And were both late 1973 build complianced in Aust in early 1974. Of course the 1302 may have already been resprayed once. Although it was only a few years old when we got it.

Is the stencilled paint code located on the inner wing behind the LH headlamp under the bonnet?

Also it may be better to take it to a paint place for them to match the paint on the car, as paint matching by code can be an art in itself. And given 40 odd years, the car may have been refinished, or the original paint is likely to have faded/altered from the original application.

This car has been repainted outside only - in ford blood orange. The code is behind the LH light. but I have not thrown on the Mister Magoo specs to read it yet.
Could you tell me what the code would read like?
Do they have names like "citrus orange" or "burgundy red"?

I will have to paint the whole car in a sealer undercoat because the repaint few years back was done in Jam (enamel). I have no trouble with painting systems. But I am doing her with Acrylic and a heap of clear. Gives a deeper colour. It's also much easier to service down the track.

Some of the orange colours that are similar on new cars do look good. May have to change it slightly but keep it close to the original. Blood orange really stands out to much for me.
What do others think?

To interpret the identification number, see this page:

The 15/17 Register - 15/17 Identification

Here are a few of the French paint codes, and a period Australian Dulux equivalent, that were issued by Renault Australia. Nowadays, I'm guessing you would get a better result searching by the original French 3-digit code. Renault generally didn't have inspirational names for their paint codes, just the three digit code and its general hue as a description.

GMH and Leyland in the 70's had such great names.

Scarlett O'Hara, strike me pink to name a few.

Just had a look through the US brochure, as they like labels.

331 Orange - Mediterranean Orange
311 Orange - Indy Orange
318 Orange - Chipper Orange

I have a book on Spartan auto paints that gives a colour for the 1971 Renault "Flame Orange" Ident. Code 12657

Just as an FYI, Flame Orange was one of the local assembly Renault colours, so not the same as used on the full import 15/17.

Out of interest.
What did the 311 Orange - Indy Orange
318 Orange - Chipper Orange look like used on the later model in 1975?

Both are more pastel than the strong 331 orange. 311 is the one seen on the later 15/17, then (I've not seen 318 in the metal) the 318 orange looks more pastel again from the pic of the Le Car.

The taxi cabs in the background are the same 318 orange

My 1975 R15TS was the same colour orange as Brisbane Yellow Cabs. I don't know what the colour code was.

Here's a list of the European Renault paint codes from around the period.
Unfortunately the descriptions leave a lot to be desired:
The whole list is about 650 lines so I just posted the ones from the 70's
