CX Citroens have got a nasty habit of allowing the handbrake cable to rub through
the HP hydraulic lines. With me it's a case of "been there - done that"
when my previous CX decided to drop the contents of the LHM tank in the middle
of Woolworths Car Park at around 6pm one night. It took a recovery vehicle to
get home.
In this series of photos, you will see that there is a webbing strap hidden
beneath the soundproofing on the firewall around the centre.
It defies belief that this car that was at the cutting edge of technology and
design in 1974 when it was released, had such a primitive piece of design incorporated
in its design.
With time, the weight and vibration of the handbrake cables, cut through the
webbing which allows them to siy on the hydraulic pipes. (arrowed) To rectify,
it is a case of getting an old seat belt, cutting to length, punching the holes
through the seat belt material and refitting around the cables making sure that
they clear the pipes.
It is most important that the holes are punched out as just working a screwdriver
through to make the hole can tend to leave a frayed type of hole which can quickly
wear larger. For security, I usually double both ends over so that I get four
thicknesses to tighten on to. It is also important to be sure to tighten the
mounting bolt (or nut) as tight as possible to prevent premature wear.
