Default r10 gearbox assembly - help wanted

Just acquired a 330-24 gearbox. It looks sound and it had a thick layer of oil and assorted crud protecting it from premature oxidation... Decided to address the oil leaks, install it and see how it goes.

    Some questions:

    1) What is the best way to get the side seals out - I have disembled the gearbox and have the bearing carriers out.

    2) there is what appears to be the remains of a fibre washer/gasket at the base of the cylindrical case that holds the needle bearings on the halfshaft pivots (trunions). There are none in the gasket set, are they critical and what is their purpose?

    3) Is there any product on the market that is superior to the Permatex aviation sealant for sealing the halves? (been a while since I've done a Renault gearbox...)

    4) Any general tips re getting these boxes not to leak?

    All the best

My 330 gearbox used to leak like buggery until I discovered I had the wrong thickness gasket behind the bearing carriers...I changed the 0.4mm paper gaskets for 0.2mm and that is all it took to fix it.
Every day when I wake up I reach up in the darkness with my eyes shut and if I cannot feel anything that resembles a wooden lid I know it will be a good day. No lid today.
