    Default Piper B270 cam? Opinions?

Hi everybody, I've been looking at these for my 206 GTi (EW10J4) for a while and they seem too good to be true, so I'm very wary. This cam is claimed to be a "fast road profile" for use with or without a remap (I will be using a piggy back tuner). The intake only cam kit is roughly half the price of the very popular CatCams fast road profiles (intake and exhaust), but still claims 15hp increase (no word from manufacturer site on whether this is wheel or flywheel, but I assume wheel), putting it just a bit (~3hp) behind the claimed 23 engine hp the CatCams claim.

Here are the specs on the cam:

    Power band: 1500-6500

    Power increase: 15hp

    Duration: 260

    Valve lift: 0.380" - 9.65mm
    0.000" - 0.00mm

    Intake ATDC: 22-58

    Full lift: 180

    Lift @ TDC with Clearance: 0.068" - 1.73mm

Made new from a blank cam.

Any opinions would be very welcome.

Advertised duration makes it almost impossible to tell how that cam will behave in comparison to the Cat Cams. It seems that it would be very mild and a fair few people on gtidrivers etc. reckon Piper's power claims are pretty inflated. Do you have the profile of your original (stock) cam?

The Piper cam has .15mm more lift at maximum than the CatCams, but I can't work out the duration other than the "260 degrees" they state. The stats of the catcams and OEM stock cam are below.

    CatCams
    Duration 248 / 240 @ 0.1 mm+cl
    Duration 219 / 211 @ 1.0 mm+cl
    Max Valve Lift 9.50 / 9.15 mm

    OEM
    Duration 245 / 240 @ 0.1 mm+cl
    Duration 207 / 202 @ 1.0 mm+cl
    Max Valve Lift 8.70 / 8.20 mm

I have sent you a PM peterT

The duration at 1mm is what you need to compare with. Nothing of any use happens before that. In Aus. we tend to follow the Americans and quote duration at 0.050" lift, which means for the same cam, the 0.050" figure will be a bit smaller, as 1mm = 0.039". For example, 219 @ 1mm would be approx. 215 @ 0.050". Rubbery figures I know, but hopefully you get the idea.

The OEM cams are fairly small so you should see a decent increase. For example, Mi16 cams are 214 deg. @ 0.050".
