Aussie Post has advised me the maximum length of parcels is 105cm ...

does anyone know the cheapest / reliable postage of a parcel which is 115cm x 10cm and about 400g?

    any advice appreciated

If you package the item into a container 105 x 75cm so your item runs through the diagonal do you comply with Aus Post?

The Déesse has all the characteristics of one of those objects fallen from another universe that fed the mania for novelty in the eighteenth century and a similar mania expressed by modern science fiction: the Déesse is first and foremost the new Nautilus.

You can be lucky and get an Aussie post counter chick who will turn a blind eye... That was my experience when I sent a DS steering rack to Pleiades.

I purposely chose to send it from the business centre as opposed to my local suburban post office because I had seen people being knocked back for slightly over sized packages. ;-)

two top-shelf suggestions - thanks brains trust!

i have been to the "business centre" and got one of those people who usually end up as airline gate staff or security people ... was like talking to a brick

have a print out of the post offices near here and will go around trying to sneak it through

that is, if the cunning Pythagorean idea doesn't work first

    JR

PS - someone want to double check my maths:

aust post has max box sizes as L=105 and "girth" G = 140 (defined as the sum of all the sides)

so conservatively the item is 115cm - which i'd call the hypotenuse or H

    making width W = square root (HxH - LxL) = about 47cm

    the item's depth D is about 12cm

    making G = 47 + 12 + 47 + 12 = 118cm

which is under the maximum limit

excellent result ... $8.60 registered post to north of Cairns from Adelaide ... better than cheapest freight to Cairns city of $42 ..

Trans Direct did a specular job in shipping a turntable in 500x 500x 400 in packing form Melbourne to Qld for $42.00

    Ph: 1300 668 229
    Email: sales@transdirect.com.au
    Web: www.transdirect.com.au

They do door to door collection and delivery and have tracking. You give all details via a web interface and pay on card.

Australia Post are a bit cheaper, far less reliable and have monkeys doing deliveries for them. I've had parcels left on the front steps in public view, on the lawn, in the paper tube . About everywhere except ringing the door bell and hand delivery.

Australia post lost me when they delivered my parcel to an incorrect address and it got stolen. I had documentary proof and ended up going to the Post Omsbudman to get an ex Gratia payout from them as compensation.

Never again - pay peanuts get monkeys.

I use www.smartsend.com.au for bigger/odd/heavy things. Based on your numbers the price would be $32. I'd still try the diagonal fit first and add Registered Post for $2 extra.

Get a black texta and write "width -105cm" on the package.
    That will fool them.

Another vote for TransDirect, used them recently to send a seat from Adelaide to Melbourne, cost was around $35, delivered door to door and fast as well.

i had thought about turning up and "helping" the staffer with the tape measure ... cunningly placing the end of the tape only approximately at the end of the item ... but Jo's suggestion takes cunning a whole different level
