    Default A diagnostic scanner for pre-2001 French cars???

    Hi All,
    Just wondering if anyone has advice about a compatible diagnostic scanner for pre-2001 cars that have electronic fuel injection. My understanding is that cars of this vintage (like my peugeot '98 306) do have an OBD type socket but do not use the OBDI protocol. This means common scanners can't communicate with the ECU. I have seen a MAXIDIAG fr704 advertised that could be suitable (see link). Otherwise it is always back to the dealer for their proprietary scanner.

    I don't know where it is located or what it's called but there a weblink about the codes on the 306 somewhere. You can flash the codes without any special tools at all. It's all down to a sequence of flashes.

    Thanks for that; I will have a look.

    Just to let everyone know, I bought the scanner and it works well. It reads engine codes as well as checking the Airbag and ABS controller units for errors. The only limitation is that the ECU is pre OBD1 or OBD 2 so does not give all the modern information.

    The only small issue was finding which type of ECU I had because about five different ones were used in the 306. I had a SAGEM 96.

    Anyway it was good value for $AU .249

    That's great news.

    You should be able to find out details of your particular 306 at Peugeot Service Box. {just join and then enter the VIN}
    The Citroen site gives details right down to ECU make.

    First file is for the marelli ECU, might not help you but the second is more general and was what I referred to. Dug it out from the depths of our second hard-drive. HTH.
