    205 Camber and Castor Adjustment?

Hi guys, I've seen lots of talk on the forum re suspension mods in terms of springs, shocks and torsion beam changes.

I've just had my spax system sorted out but really need to be able to adjust camber and caster to get it to handle well on the track.

These settings on the 205 are by default not adjustable. Does anyone know whether there are parts available to allow these adjustments to be made?

    Anyone else done this?

    Cheers

I know SBC in the UK do suspension mods that include altered suspension parts. NickR has got phase 2 suspension from them fitted I think.

Burton Power in the UK have them for 205's.They are high grade HE30TF alloy spherical bearing mounts, and claim to be able to adjust caster and camber in minutes. Though it may not be able to adjust castor, as the hub is forged and holds the strut in a fixed for/aft position. approx price is 69.95GBP each. If you look into these keep me posted.

Kmac suspension (based insydney)make UNIVERSAL adjustable strut top mounts that allow canber/castor adjustment, combined with your SPAX system, i think will make for excelent handling, play with your tortion bar set height if you can as this helps in pugs, specially 306's.

one of the biggest improvements is uprate the rear
sway bar [available from peugeot sports, coventry]
to the 24mm one [i think] HUGE difference.

For what it is worth i have the following on my 205 and it handles way above my stock 8valver i use to compare. avo coilovers with top adjustables for height, rose joints, proflex poly everything, group N engine mounts, rally spec
torsion bars and rear 24mm bar. the only thing that lets it down is that ive put shite tyres on...there coming off this weekend!! cheers jr

What sort of tyres do you have for the track. My 205 had std. suspension, but geez the difference Dunlop Formula r's made to the handling was amazing. Turned it from a vicious oversteerer to something a lot friendlier. Tyre pressures are critical in race tyres. Cant remember what the pressures were, but they were something like 10 or 15 pounds less than the road tyre track pressures. Someone like Demon Tweeks in the U.K. had a camber kit I think, for 205's

Warwick, thats interesting about the air pressure on those race tyres as i was just reading the qld
raceway recommended requirements for this weekends
trackday and they say "it is recommended to put at least 4psi MORE in your tyres" i'm intrigued now...anybody? cheers jr

    Thanks for the feedback guys

In terms of tyres, I am just waiting for my R-Spec tyres to arrive. The only ones that will fit over the front brakes and under the guards are Toyo 205/40/17 - should be good but unfortuntaely damn expensive. I totally agree in terms of good tyres being a major factor in good handling.

On tyre pressures - although I'm certainly not an expert and happy to stand corrected In all the racing I have ever done on tracks, the following rule has applied. For a proper race-track (ie long laps), we have always increased tyre pressure - we used to run around 40-42 psi in the WRX for road tyres and around 36-38 psi for R-spec tyres to provide good contact and handling during high cornering speeds. For shorter motorkhana/autokhana type events, On R-spec tyres (and within reason) you can drop tyre pressures to get more contact surface area as the sidewalls on R-spec tyres are much stiffer than road tyres. Doing the same on a road tyre however will have the reverse effect as the sidewalls are generally much softer and through a corner the flex would cause a lessening of contact area.

Courtesy of the previous owner, my car has the 24mm upgraded rear torsion beam. What we found on the weekend is that the back is getting very light under brakes and the guy that normally sets up my cars has recommended stiffer front springs.

I have found some eccentric adjustable strup top mounts from MotorsportParts in the UK which provide both camber and caster adjustment (4 degrees either way). They look pretty good and have all of the fittings. I am probably going to order these in the next couple of days.

I have just fitted yoko advans [r spec] for the track and just to clarify the pressures i phoned yoko australia. They were very helpful and told me if theyre road tyres you go up in psi and the r
    specs for quarter mile sprints..16psi
    track days...cold at 24 psi[should get to 80-100
degrees to be operating good [if hot on shoulders more psi req. or camber adjust]
    normal driving..32psi
tested mine out and once they got hot they were a good 10-15%better handling. Pity they were so expensive tho!!

Which club are you a member of jr? Are you planning to much club stuff next year? I was thinking of joining Brisbane Sporting Car Club but am now thinking that the club on the Gold Coast (can't remember their name) might be better. I want to do Mt Cotton Hillclimb, Leyburn, Pittsworth and sprints at QR and Morgan Park. Darlington would be nice and I'm still confident we will see Lakeside used again.

Did you go to that Street Car Shootout at QR on Sunday?

The critical factor - particularly for R-Spec tyres - is tread temp. Higher tread temp equals better grip, though over heat equals cooked rubber. As mentioned by the other guys R spec tyres have stiffer side walls and can run lower tyre pressures (mid 20's) - allowing a more rapid heat build up in the tyre, which is better grip sooner.

Pressures should also be varied depending on the length of the track run, if its a 3 lap sprint then you can go softer, if its a half hour stint increase the PSI to prevent overheating.

For road tryes higher (above 35PSI) is better, as mentioned to keep stiffness in the side wall.

On my 205 with Koni shocks, Eibach srings, lowered 35mm, 16" 195/45 Michelin Pilots, I run about 38/35 PSI - front/rear-. Slightly lower rear pressures allow slighly less grip on the rear - encouraging the back to break first - though in reality this means less understeer and a more balanced car.I've found this makes a noticable difference on the track.

PS Jnr - I see your car is comming along very nicely, something you asked about last year was a rear disc conversion. I recently fitted 306 discs to my S1 205, using Pug Sport hardened disc stub axles and the rear bits from a 306 Rallye. Incidently these brakes are the same as the 205's (247mm disc).

Yeah Cal i plan to do more stuff next year but i dont belong to any club...is it necesary? I'd like
to do leyburn and a few hi-tec shootouts as they had last sunday at qr. I was all set up to go with the new r spec tyres on etc however somebody used a rattle gun on the lugs and ruined one thred
thus only having 3 lugs on a wheel..not too safe at 200k's me tinks. next year i'll deffo be there.

Tomorrow nite at willowbank is the test and tune/quarter mile runs..pretty cheap too! If my lug is rectified i'll deffo give the pug a squirt!
Why dont you bring along the mi16? If i have no pug i'll resort to next best..the gti-r. LOL

Thanks for the reply jr. You will need to be a member of a CAMS affiliated club to get the basic S2 licence. I am checking out a few options at the moment. I will let you know if you are interested.

That sux about Sunday. I wanted to run the MI16, but was told it was for post 1990 models only. There ended up being plenty of earlier stuff there. I think they would get a bigger turn out if they made it for post 1980.

I don't really have any desire to put the Pug down the 1/4. It would be hard pressed to beat 17secs. The motor is virtually standard. Besides, I'm going out to dinner. Thanks for letting me know though. Looking forward to getting it on the track now though, with the new suspension and 16inch wheels. Handles great.

Club-wise, maybe Queensland Raceway as they may offer discounts on track days. I am a life member with many extras added, but I had to pay $1000 for the pleasure. For the types of events you mentioned MG car club may be the go as they get invites to everything, and they own the Mt. Cotton hillclimb. 70% of the club are not MGs, but race cars of all types, and a knowledgable and helpful lot, in a friendly atmosphere.

Well the Adjustable Strut-tops finally arrived from the UK (after taking out a 2nd mortgage to pay for the freight ) so I thought I'd post some pics. They are eccentric top mounts and apparently provide up to 4 degrees camber and castor adjustment - nicely made with a central spherical bearing.

They get fitted next week just in time for the first few events - can't wait with these and my R-specs I might stay on the track blush

Just thought I'd provide an update on Camber and Caster adjustments..

We got the adjustable strut-tops in but I think because of the rest of my suspension setup (lowered springs etc etc) we didn't get enough out of them - only around 1.5 degrees

Searching the 205gtidrivers forum I found quite a few guys in the UK replace the 205 lower wishbones with ones from a 309 which were 10mm longer and this apparently helps heaps. I've heard conflicting reports about whether you need to change driveshafts as well but apparently consensus was not.

That's good news. I've got some 309 wishbones but was concerned about the lengths. On the Peugeot motorsport site there are two different length shafts listed.

Peter, you've got 309 wishbones - you lucky, lucky b*stard You must have your own Peugeot wishing well somewhere

I'm currently chasing some up from the UK. Let me know if for some strange reason you decide to sell yours - as you know they're as rare as hen's teeth over here.
