    604s

Can anyone tell me just how many 604s were imported into Australia?
I have been told 200 and 600, but nobody seems to know for sure.

Pugrambo is probably the one to ask, since he seems the 604 expert on here.

I'd say the number is atleast 600, since there were about 50 605s sold here and there seems to be alot more 604s around than 605s.

In the 1980s it seemed that there were more than 10 times as many 604s around as there is 605s around now, so 200 sounds like way too few 604s for me. They're not quite that rare.

i will sit down and work through for the closest number if you like but there were off the top of my head close to between 5 and 700 604's sold in this country of which at least 75% of them were leased to companies or professional people
very few were sold to the average pug nut that happened to waltz into the showroom
when you think the 504 was on sale at the same time and it was 1/2 the price of a 604
list price for a 604 towards the end of it's days here in 1980 was $23 990
albeit they were loaded with goodies but for the everyday pug nut it was too much to outlay for basically a big bodied 504

not really a 604 expert just spent many an hour in, under, over and around 604's
probably more than most people have or would bother
mind you i could just about talk 604's all day

I wouldn't be surprised if it was more than 600, but any 'official' figure would have to be inflated by private imports, of which there seems to have been a surprising number.

I agree that 200 seems way short of the mark. The figure was given to me by the man I bought my 604 from, but he is really a Fiat freak so I wouldn't take his Pug knowledge as gospel.
I know of at least 5 604s in the Hobart region, but only 1 605 was ever sold down here (I know the man who bought it).
Does anyone know if it is an easy job to convert a 604 to manual? Does the torque tube need replacing? Can I use a 504 pedal box/clutch?
Also will a 504 servo fit a 604, as mine is knackered?

it is easy if you have the bell housing
use a 505 clutch as they are the same
use the later model 504 clutch pedal and you will find that the 604 already has the shaft there for the pedal
use a 505 clutch fluid resovior (sp?) and 505 cylinders
drop the engine cross member down a couple of inches to allow room
the torque tube and tail shaft are the same
use the later model 504 gear lever (the one that bolts to the body not the torque tube)
as for the brake servo use a 604 one or get yours rebuilt
the later 505 ones may be the same but don't quote me on that
604 ones are a bigger unit from the 504 ones
the last of the bell housings i knew of have been sold so you will be looking at a few hundred now for one unless you can get one from england
left hand drive ones are available but you can't run them with power steering in the car but they are fine if you are putting the engine into a 504
there are a few manual ones around and i am on the trail of one at the moment that has a right hand drive bell housing in it and a BA10/5 box (that i rebuilt)
still hunting it down though and i'm afraid that when and if i find it it will only be good as a parts car but it's worth my chasing if i can locate it
anyway getting off the track here
have fun with the car and if you have any queries regarding the car let me know and i'll see what i can help you with
they are a great car when well sorted and please please please if it has the mechanical fuel pump still pumping fuel change it and put an electric pump under the tank at the rear before the car is a molten mess

And if not a molten mess, before the engine cooks itself because you lost the water due to that fuel pump leaking...

    Dave,
Only the 505 turbo has the same clutch.
I went through all this when I had my V6.
