    Default S1 205gti Dash Mod

i saw a mod where the top heater/air vent on the dash of the s1 gti was taken out and the stereo installed there.
this not only looked good but left the head unit far more accessable .
    my question is.
would it be possible to re-route the heater vents to where the stereo sits now and use the top vent for my system.
i know, lotsof pulling the dash apart time but in theory, could it be done?

Hey bazz, I want to do a carbon dash, let's get an old one and attack it?
See if we can make a carbon one with the ICE up there?

i too seen this somewhere and having seen the rear of my dash i had an idea of using that air con silver flex stuff, smaller diameter tho.

Hey Bazz, Does your S1 dash have cracks? If it doesn't it probably will have after you try and pull it out and put it back (bit of a waste). If it's already cracked it will probably fall to bits when you pull it out.

Anyway if you still want to proceed I can help you out with a f**ked S1 dash. All the usual bits broken and it doesn't include switches etc. But its free.

The dash is simple to remove, but you have to be very careful as some larger parts are joined with thin narrow bits of brittle plastic (glovebox). Try not to flex it!

A simple way to reinforce the parts is to put a layer of fibreglass over it. The plastic is resistant to most glues, but fibreglass hangs on (and doesn't eat the dash!). I re-covered all of the brittle parts of my dash with fibreglass and moulded a new glovebox flap with blue foam and fibreglass.

I'm looking at coverings atm. I really want to do alcantara with thin red stitching (shifter boot style), but that stuff is uber-expensive, so i'm after something that's "fuzzy" and UV resistant. :p

If you want to see how i reattached the instrument cluster to it's backing after it snapped all three screw holes, i can upload some photo's.

my dash is the best condition s1 dash ive ever seen.
i armourall regularly it to keep it subtle and flexable without cracking.
id like to take out the dash and reinforce it with fibreglass and silicone to keep it in the condition its in.
but you have a point, ill be very carefull and not force it.

What do you want your dash to look like chris? Are you planning on doing the entire thing, or just the drivers side and centre bit?

I found a pic a while back on the 205 forum that was interesting... (i think the guy is a member here too)

It looks a bit bare in the car though, so you may want some of the lower bits as well...although, in your car i guess you don't need them.

Interesting that he formed the binnacle cover onto the main dash backing as a single piece. I imagine that would make say, changing a bulb in the instrument cluster a bit of a PITA...

I'm going to make some steel pins to replace the plastic ones that snapped off to hold the binnacle in. I think it'd be better to keep that piece seperate.

Also, if i was doing carbon, i'd leave the main dash as is, to highlight the carbon hints. I think it's nice in moderation... but that's just overload! Also, the main dash is the least cracky kind of plastic in the car... :p

#1, i think the reflections would be horrible off that, prob binnacle and centre carbon with some bits covered in alcant or summit
    #2Yeah, bit OTT
#3The lower bits would probably go well too

Bazz, looks like we got ourselves a convooooy

Those carbon dashes are 175 Pounds from a mob in the UK. Fairly expensive but i think it looks quite good. Agree with you chris that the sun reflect off it to much.

Hmmm will be watching with interest, the same as you Bazz I pulled my dash apart and made it 'better', but used a whole heap of custom aliminium brackets, the dash is great, still a few creaks, but thats mainly over big bumps, rough roads, but it is way better than what it was.

Keep us to date on what you do would be interested to see what you turn out
